Any kind of basil is the favorite herb for gardeners and cooks. One of the most important reasons why we like this herb is its delicious aroma. The French variety Marseille is one of the most fragrant varieties. So, if you like the smell of basil, you can collect a little bit of Marseilles basil information and grow it.

What is Marseilles basil? Marseilles is only one of the basil varieties, as its name implies, it comes from France. It is sometimes called the "king of perfume" because it is best known for its rich fragrance. It smells sweet and slightly licorice, just like other types of basil, but the aroma is more effective.

Marseilles basil is famous for its small and compact size. It has dense leaves, but only about 10 inches (25 centimeters) in height and about 8 inches (20 centimeters) in width. The factory branches neatly, does not need pruning or shaping, and well fills the space.

As a culinary herb, Marseilles basil can be used as any other variety. It goes well with tomatoes, spaghetti, mild cheese and vegetables. You can eat it fresh in salads, in baked dishes, or dry leaves for storage and use. It tastes sweeter than other varieties, but it is still acceptable for any recipe that requires basil. In France, Marcella basil is traditionally used in pistols, a sauce similar to pesto.

Grow Marseilles basil. When it comes to container-grown basil, Marseilles is an obvious choice. Plants grow compact and dense. Even for small plants in indoor or outdoor containers, you can get rich full-size leaves. Because of its compact nature and dense growth, it is also a good plant at the edges and boundaries of the garden. Of course, it's also great in the garden or container, just add delicious aroma to any space.

Whether you grow it, Marseilles basil care is very simple. You can start seeds indoors. They should germinate within five to ten days. There are two sets of true leaves, which should be ready to be transplanted to the bed or container.

Make sure they have enough direct sunlight and warmth. If you are in a container, make sure it drains. Of course, the outdoor bed should also drain well. Water plants regularly to keep the soil moist but not flooded. Basil works best in fertile soil, so you can add compost or fertilize if necessary.

Marseilles will grow densely without much attention, but to encourage shape and prevent flowering, pinch off the growth tips.
