Huangpi farmer Zhang Benshun grows strange vegetables

Eggplant looks like an egg and tastes like milk after being cut. Golden towel gourd does not need to be cut, it becomes strands of shredded melon with a pat. Yesterday, Huangpi farmer Zhang Benshun successfully cultivated "exotic vegetables" from Europe.

Yesterday, the reporter saw in Zhang Benshun's farm "experimental field" that the ground was full of yellow watermelons (golden watermelons) and black bitter melons. And a kind of "milk egg eggplant" is even more distinctive, eggplant resembles a boiled egg that has been shelled, and after peeling it has a taste of milk (pictured). It is understood that the yield of these exotic vegetables is very high, such as black balsam pear can bear 60 kilograms.

Zhang Benshun said that in June 2007, he went to Switzerland, Denmark and other countries to inspect local crops. When he came back, he introduced 18 varieties through the Ministry of Agriculture. After more than one year of practice, 12 varieties have been cultivated. Zhang Benshun said that these vegetables are very "delicate": they will die after 35 ℃, so they should be cooled by air conditioning; before each planting, they need to turn over the soil to kill insects with potassium permanganate; and "milk eggplant" is used to irrigate the land with expired milk, so the eggplant has a milky flavor.

According to Liu Wei, director of the Huangpi Hengdian Institute of Industry and Commerce, when these exotic vegetables were successfully tested, two large hotels in Wuhan expressed interest and asked for exclusive supply, but Zhang Benshun did not agree.

Zhang Benshun calculated to the reporter that the output value of tomatoes per mu of Putong is 2000-3000 yuan, while planting "milk eggplant" can reach 30, 000 yuan, 10-15 times that of the former. Once the industrial chain of this characteristic agriculture is formed, a lot of manpower and material resources will be needed from production, packaging, distribution, sales to management, and it can also lead to the employment of more than 1,000 labor forces nearby. "within five years, the output value will be conservatively estimated to be over 100 million."
