Last Updated: 2024/10/06, Increasing grain production capacity requires an increase in grain prices.

The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) said that the country will take a series of policy measures to ensure that the country's grain production capacity will increase to more than 550 billion kg by 2020, an increase of 50 billion kg over the existing production capacity. The head of the National Development and Reform Commission said that agriculture is still a weak link in the national economy, and food and food security still face severe challenges.

From the strategic point of view of China's grain production and supply, it is necessary for the state to adopt a series of policies and measures to improve grain production capacity and to deal with the severe challenges facing China's food and food security. however, it is necessary to take more policy measures and greater efforts to raise grain prices to ensure that grain farmers increase their income. At present, it is more urgent to protect and stimulate the production enthusiasm and creativity of grain farmers. No matter how high the grain production capacity is, if the income of farmers growing food crops is still lower than that of other cash crops such as fruit trees and medicinal herbs, and that of going out to work, not many people are willing to have a variety of food crops. the high-yield energy of grain will only be empty talk.

In recent years, due to the relatively low efficiency of engaging in grain production, in the vast rural land of our country, some young and middle-aged farmers have become accustomed to working in cities to earn money, leaving only the old and weak women and children left behind to manage the land at home. and because of their lack of physical strength, they have to give up part of the land for farming, so the phenomenon of land "abandonment" has long been widespread. Thus it can be seen that China's existing grain production capacity has not been properly utilized and excavated. Although the government has been committed to raising grain prices, adopting "protective prices" for grain purchases and "direct subsidies" for grain farmers, it still seems to be not enough. the increase in farmers' income is often offset or "dropped deeper" due to synchronized or even larger increases in the prices of chemical fertilizers, pesticides and other means of production.

Therefore, to deal with the challenges of food and food security, we should not only focus on the long term, but also base ourselves on the present. We should not only increase grain production capacity in the long run, but also adopt a series of policies and measures to increase grain purchase prices and increase the intensity of grain "direct subsidy", so as to increase the income of farmers and arouse the enthusiasm of farmers to grow grain. Only when the comparative benefit of farmers growing grain is raised to an appropriate level, so that farmers can really feel that it is also "cost-effective" to grow grain, can their enthusiasm and creativity in growing grain be restored and improved. only then will the plan to increase grain production capacity be implemented, so as to better meet the severe challenges faced by China's food and food security.
