(agricultural Wealth Network) according to the latest counsellor's report released by the United States Department of Agriculture, Brazilian wheat production in 2009 is expected to be 5 million tons, down 17 percent from 6 million tons the previous year.

The bad weather in the wheat producing areas of Rio Grande do Sul and Parana reduced the wheat yield from 2.48 tons to 1.84 tons. The quality of wheat also decreased significantly.

In addition, if the weather remains rainy in the south during November, the damaged wheat could reach 2.5 million tons. Parana, Brazil's largest wheat-producing region, has been hit hard by wheat, and wheat production is likely to fall by 20% from the initial estimate of 3.5 million tons to only 2.8 million tons.

Parana received 244 millimeters of rain in July, the highest level since 1976, and continued to rain in August and September, leading to record rainfall.

The rainy weather increases the chances of wheat crops being infected with diseases and insect pests.
