Australia: raw sugar production is expected to increase by 10% next year
(Agricultural Wealth Network) Raw sugar production in Australia is expected to rise 10 percent next year as farmers plant more cane to benefit from a doubling of global sugar prices this year, according to the report.
Australia's Queensland Sugarcane Growers Association estimated Monday that about 4.3 million tonnes of raw sugar will be produced in 2009 and 4.7 million tonnes in 2010, the best yield in four years.
Australia produced 4.6 million tonnes of raw sugar last year, of which about 3.4 million tonnes were sent to export markets.
Harvesting is currently in its final stages and is expected to yield about 30 million tons of sugar cane, a fairly low amount but with sugar content at a high of more than 20 years.
Damage caused by flooding at the beginning of the year and dry weather ending the growing season have reduced sugarcane production, but dry weather means harvesting will be completed about six weeks earlier.
