With the support of the national policy of benefiting farmers, the total grain production and grain commodity rate of Heilongjiang Province, the "granary" of our country, have increased steadily in recent years. The reporter learned from the office for revitalizing the old industrial base of Heilongjiang Province that last year, the total grain output of this province reached 42.25 million tons, the grain commodity rate reached about 80 percent, and a large number of commercial grain was sold to markets outside the province.

Heilongjiang Province is the largest commercial grain production base in China, which enjoys the reputation of "Beidacang". Over the past six years since the implementation of the strategy of revitalizing the old industrial base, the province has continuously increased investment in agricultural infrastructure, agricultural science and technology, pulled the province's total grain output to record highs, and achieved four historic breakthroughs in sown area, total yield, per unit yield and high quality rate.

In 2004, the total grain output of Heilongjiang Province exceeded 30 million tons, and has been stable at more than 30 million tons since then. In 2008, the province's total grain output broke through the 40 million tons mark for the first time, reaching 42.25 million tons, and the grain commodity rate reached about 80 percent, making new contributions to ensuring national food security. This year, the total grain output of Heilongjiang Province is expected to exceed 42.5 million tons, another record high.

A person from the office of revitalizing the old industrial base in Heilongjiang Province said that in the future, the province will continue to improve the basic conditions of agriculture and rural areas, especially to promote the construction of key water conservancy projects and strengthen the construction of rural infrastructure. Relying on the advantages of unique agricultural resources, large scale of agricultural production and operation, and high degree of mechanization, we should speed up the development of modern agriculture and build a reliable "big granary" of the country.
