The French National Centre for Scientific Research has issued a communique saying that climate warming has seriously affected plant reproduction in the tropical rainforest of French Guiana.

French researchers investigated all plants on a mountain in the rainforest of French Guiana for 10 years between 1995 and 2005, the communique said. The results showed that in 10 years, 1/5 of the plant reproduction was affected, and the trees and shrubs in the seedling stage were the most affected.

The researchers also found that within 10 years, half of the rare plants on the mountain had become extinct.

The researchers say this phenomenon is mainly caused by global warming. Over the past 50 years, the average temperature in French Guiana has risen by 2 degrees Celsius, and the drought in the rainforest is becoming more and more serious, making it impossible for many plants to reproduce normally.

Climate warming has affected all plant species in the rainforests of French Guiana to varying degrees and may even cause an ecological crisis, the researchers said.
