Un Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said on the 16th that in order to ensure global food security, countries need to reach an agreement at the United Nations Climate change Conference to be held in Copenhagen, Denmark, at the end of this year.

Ban Ki-moon said at the opening ceremony of the World Food Security Summit on the same day that food security and climate change are closely related, and without climate security, there can be no food security, so an agreement must be reached at the climate change conference in Copenhagen next month to conclude a new binding international treaty on reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Ban Ki-moon said that today's food crisis is a wake-up call for tomorrow, and the global population is expected to reach 9 billion by 2050. At the same time, the global climate is changing, making food security face more serious challenges.

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization has warned that if the global average temperature rises by 2 degrees Celsius, potential agricultural output in Africa, Asia and Latin America will fall by 20 to 40 percent, while agricultural production in sub-Saharan Africa will be hit hardest.

The group estimates that the number of hungry and malnourished people in the world exceeded 1 billion for the first time this year, reaching 1.02 billion, an increase of 100 million over last year. In order to draw attention to the problem of global hunger, Ban Ki-moon launched a 24-hour hunger strike on the 15th. Ban Ki-moon said that the taste of hunger strike is not good, but for tens of millions of poor people around the world who suffer from hunger, starving is a cruel reality they have to face every day.

The three-day World Food Security Summit kicked off on the 16th at the headquarters of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Rome, aimed at finding effective ways to help more than 1 billion people around the world get rid of hunger.
