The European Commission issued a communiqu é on the 16th, welcoming the agreement reached at the meeting of the International Atlantic Tuna Protection Commission in Brazil on a plan to protect bluefin tuna in the Atlantic and Mediterranean, according to which the quota for bluefin tuna in the Atlantic and Mediterranean will be reduced to 13500 tons next year, 38.6% less than this year.

In addition, the International Atlantic Tuna Conservation Commission has also decided that starting from next year, fishing quotas will be determined on the basis of the ecological survey report on bluefin tuna compiled by scientists, and that if the fish population decreases sharply, it will consider adopting a total ban on fishing the following year.

"these specific and ambitious plans mark decisive progress in managing and protecting bluefin tuna in the Atlantic and Mediterranean," said Joe Bolger, the EU commissioner for fisheries and ocean. our goal is to restore the bluefin tuna population and make the fishing industry healthy and sustainable.

The International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tuna meets every year to negotiate and decide on fishing quotas for bluefin tuna in the Atlantic and Mediterranean, and this year 48 countries and regions sent representatives to attend the meeting in Recife, on the east coast of Brazil.
