Raising pigs ecologically in fermentation beds is nothing new, but it is difficult to raise chickens because different animals discharge different feces and different fermentation microorganisms are needed. Today, 30, 000 chickens in Nanjing live in fermentation beds, and farmers can reduce their labor by half as much as traditional farming, and each shed can easily earn 25000 yuan with their eyes closed. This technological improvement has benefited from the unremitting efforts of the Nanjing Municipal Committee of Agriculture for two years.

In a chicken breeding base named Qin Bangjipin in Liuhe District, Nanjing, the author visited the technology of raising chickens in a fermentation bed. In a 270sqm high-shouldered double-arched greenhouse, 1300 chicks are looking for food. The fermentation bed made of 2.6 tons of rice husk and straw not only provides a good growth environment for chickens, but also converts chicken feces and rice husks into bacterial protein, which becomes a good food for chickens.

A month ago, eggs on the bed were quietly on the shelves in some high-end shopping malls in Nanjing and Shanghai. This kind of eggs, which are no different from ordinary grass eggs, are sold for 5 yuan each, and the supply falls short of demand. Technical personnel said that the best fermentation bed culture is a combination of captive breeding and natural stocking, so when farmers build fermentation beds, they mostly choose hilly areas with grass and trees. The chicken lives in the greenhouse is an environmentally friendly bed, there is a natural playground outside, so that the chicken is as close to the natural state as possible.

Fang Zhongyou, deputy director of the Nanjing Municipal Committee of Agriculture, told me that the urban aquaculture industry is facing two bottlenecks, namely, pollution diseases and the impact of land policies. Practice has proved that raising chickens in fermentation beds can break through these two bottlenecks and achieve a win-win situation for both citizens and farmers. It is reported that Nanjing will encourage farmers to develop bed-raising chickens by means of subsidies this year, with a target of 500000 chickens.
