The quality of honey blended with rice syrup even meets EU standards. It is called indicator honey in the industry.

China's annual output of raw honey is about 80, 000 tons, but in 2010, honey exports reached 101100 tons, and domestic sales of honey are no less than those exported. The extra output can only be made up by syrup.

Real honey, fake honey

Sweet as honey, this ancient Chinese blessing may change. A few days ago, a food popular science team called Green basket randomly inspected the honey sold in the market and found that the honey claimed to have various effects on supermarket shelves turned out to be fake honey.

The report, issued by the Inspection and Quarantine Technology Center of Qinhuangdao entry-exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau (hereinafter referred to as Qinhuangdao Inspection Center), shows that domestic honey brands Yuehuo Lycium barbarum honey and Guanshengyuan pure natural honey have been detected to contain an additive called rice syrup.

According to the national standard of honey (GB18796-2005) which was promulgated and implemented in 2005, no starch, sugar or sugar substitute can be added or mixed into honey. This means that the above two types of honey are actually fake honey.

Qinhuangdao Inspection Center is a national key laboratory for bee product testing, and the identification of true and false honey is one of its main businesses. The green basket entrusted to the center for testing is a volunteer science popularization team composed of 11 honey industry experts, media reporters and lawyers. It is said that the method used in this test is the SM-R technology (rice syrup test in honey), which was just introduced in March 2011.

As soon as the test results were released, it caused a stir in the industry.

At present, rice syrup is the main force of honey fraud in China, and its secret means and ferocious flooding are difficult to prevent.

Cofco Yuehuo's official Weibo issued a statement on July 22, 2011, saying that Yuehuo honey follows strict quality control standards from raw materials to finished products, and all products meet the requirements of relevant national standards. Southern weekend reporter learned that some of the websites that reproduced green basket testing-related news received a letter from Jiheng Group requesting withdrawal. Jiheng Group is a cooperative public relations company of Cofco Yuehuo.

On the same day, Guanshengyuan also issued a statement on its website, saying that its honey will never add any substances other than honey raw materials in the whole production and processing process, and that all honey products meet all the standard requirements of GB18796-2005, and there is a qualified test report issued by a third-party authoritative testing organization.

Zhou Lei, head of the honey project of the Green basket Science Popularization Group, is obviously dissatisfied with this. He said that COFCO Yuehuo wolfberry honey was produced by Shandong Huakang Bee Industry Co., Ltd. After the test results were announced, a number of bee enterprises in Beijing and Hubei called Green basket, reflecting that Shandong Huakang is a major counterfeiter in the country, and its counterfeiting level is so high that it can be sent to the European Union for testing after counterfeiting.

A staff member of Shandong Huakang Company confirmed that the company did produce live wolfberry honey in the contract manufacturing industry, but did not respond to further interviews with Southern weekend reporters.

On Tuesday, a staff member of Jiheng Group, Cofco's public relations company, issued a report on the latest inspection of the Qinhuangdao inspection center to Southern weekend reporters. In the inspection report issued on July 23, all samples of Chinese wolfberry honey tested negative for rice syrup (that is, no rice syrup was detected).

Why are the conclusions of the same brand products, the same testing institution and the same testing method quite different? We are tested according to the third-party laboratory, who entrusts us to do the project, as long as we can do it. Cao Yanzhong, director of the Qinhuangdao Inspection Center, told Southern weekend that all the test results are only responsible for the incoming samples.

In fact, such test results are not surprising. At present, rice syrup is the main force of honey fraud in China, and its secret means and ferocious flooding are difficult to prevent.
