For example, in China, a major move of Luhua this year is to launch "high oleic acid peanut oil"; in the United States, high oleic acid soybean oil is entering restaurants, canteens and food industries, and high oleic acid soybean has developed to the third generation, which will become the fourth largest crop after corn, conventional soybean and wheat.
"High oleic acid oil" is usually more than oleic acid content, basically more than 75%-80%. However, the recent launch of new oil products by international grain and oil giant Cargill has turned the war on high oleic acid into a new direction.
On December 19, Cargill, an international grain and oil giant, announced that it would launch high-oleic rapeseed oil with the lowest saturated fat content to commercial food customers around the world.
The saturated fat content of this oil is only 4.5% or less, which is 35% lower than before, and it is said to be the lowest saturated fat content oil on the market; it also maintains taste, fry resistance, freshness and stability.
Cargill also stressed that the oil is non-genetically modified and that Cargill researchers spent a decade getting the canola through traditional crossbreeding methods.
In early 2018, the first batch of oil will reach customers.
Why is low saturated fat so important?
Because the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the country's Dietary Guidelines recommend that Americans limit their daily intake of saturated fat to 10 percent of total calories.
The United States also mandates that nutrition labels on restaurant menus and retail foods indicate the content of ingredients, including "saturated fat" and "trans fat."
Cargill's new rapeseed oil therefore offers consumers a healthier option.
Cargill has a long history of understanding market needs and being the first to provide rapeseed oil products that meet the nutritional and performance needs of the food industry. Cargill first introduced double-low rapeseed oil with low linolenic acid in 1992; high-oleic rapeseed oil in 1993; and 80% high-oleic rapeseed oil commercially in 2011.
Compared with foreign countries, the research on high oleic acid rape in China started late but developed. Hunan Agricultural University, Huazhong Agricultural University and Zhejiang Province Academy of Agricultural Sciences have carried out variety breeding and research.
Zhejiang Province Academy of Agricultural Sciences bred a new strain 'Zheyou 20' with oleic acid content close to 80%, and launched "Aishifu" high oleic acid healthy rapeseed oil.
Huazhong Agricultural University and Hubei Jingmen Minfeng Oil Co., Ltd. jointly developed and established a high-oleic acid high-quality rape experimental demonstration base. This year, the harvest area has reached 1200 mu. It is estimated that the price of high-oleic rapeseed oil will be twice as high as that of ordinary rapeseed oil.
The new oil products of grain and oil giant Cargill once again confirm the market outlet of "high oleic acid".
China oil industry should pay attention to the international market trend of high oleic acid, fully realize that high oleic acid rape is another new opportunity for rape industry after double low rape, and speed up the cultivation, approval and popularization of new varieties.
When nutrition and health become important criteria for consumers to choose edible oils, in the next high-oleic feast, I don't know who will be the final winner.
