Raising your own crops is an interesting and healthy family activity. Learn how to grow new potatoes to provide you with seasonal fresh baby supplies and post-season tuber crops. Potatoes can grow on the ground or in containers. Growing new potatoes is easy, and there are only some special care techniques that can keep your plants healthy.

When to plant new potatoes

Potatoes had better start in a cool season. Tubers are best formed when the soil temperature is between 60 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit (16-21 degrees Celsius). The two periods for growing new potatoes are spring and summer. Early-season potatoes were planted in July or early April, and late-season crops began to sow in July. Early sprouting plants may be damaged by hooligan freezes, but as long as the soil remains warm, it will rebound.

Grow new potatoes

Potatoes can start with seeds or seed potatoes. Seed potatoes are recommended because they have been bred to resist disease and are certified. Compared with seed-starting plants, they will also provide you with the earliest and fullest harvest. The method of how to grow new potatoes varies slightly from variety to variety. As a general rule, growing new potatoes requires well-drained soil and a lot of organic matter. Growing new potatoes requires a lot of water to fuel the production of tubers.

The planting bed needs to be well cultivated and modified with organic nutrients. The trenches are 3 inches deep and 24 to 36 inches apart. Cut the seed potatoes into parts with at least two or three eyes or growing points. Separate the fragments by 12 inches, with most of the eyes facing up. When growing new potatoes, cover the clods gently with soil. When they sprout, add more soil to cover the green growth until it matches the soil level. The grooves will be filled and potatoes will be planted until they are ready for harvest.

When will new potatoes be harvested?

Young tubers are sweet and soft, and underground stems can be delaminated from near the soil surface and produce soil. Harvest new potatoes with a shovel at the end of the season. Dig 4 to 6 inches around the plant and pull out the potatoes. When growing new potatoes, keep in mind that most potatoes will be close to the surface of the water, and digging should be as careful as possible to avoid damage.

Store new potatoes

Rinse or wipe off dirt from tubers and let them dry. Store them in a dry dark room between 38 and 40 degrees Fahrenheit (3-4 degrees Celsius). Under these conditions, potatoes can be stored for several months. Put them in a box or open container and often check for rotten potatoes because the rot can spread and may quickly destroy the entire batch.
