When it comes to earthworms, most people are familiar with them. They are molluscs crawling in the ground. They are all too common. But why on earth did Darwin call earthworms the most valuable animals in the world? Recently, the reporter found the answer during an interview in Yangping Village, Jiangjun Township, Hongya County.

At the back of the Yangping cow breeding base, several tractors dumped cow dung back and forth into the field, while the workers in the field shoveled cow dung onto the ridge. What kind of things grow in the field need so much cow dung? The reporter questioned an old farmer who was busy with his work. The old farmer shoveled up a handful of cow dung on the ridge, and the red, soft earthworms quickly climbed out, and there were a lot of them. There were dozens of earthworms in such a small shovel. It turns out that what is planted in this pile of cow dung is neither grain nor vegetables, but earthworms. Nearly 200 mu of cow dung field is the earthworm breeding base here, specially feeding earthworms with cow dung.

It is a little uncomfortable to see so many earthworms crawling among cow dung for the first time. Keeper Wang Dagui said, "Don't dislike these earthworms. They are not good-looking and valuable."

Hou Chunlin, a local villager, is the production director of the earthworm breeding base. He said that earthworms, also known as earthworms, can be used as medicine, as well as natural bait, and can even be served on the table. The varieties raised are "Taiping No.1" and "Taiping No.2" big red earthworms, with a yield of about 2000 kilograms per mu.

It is surprising that cow dung can raise expensive earthworms, and what is even more surprising is that even the feces from earthworms are equally valuable. "earthworm dung is gold, not soil," Hou Chunlin told reporters. The feces discharged by earthworms have a very high content of organic matter, and they are excellent organic fertilizers for nurseries, vegetables, fish ponds, and family bonsai. The current market price of this fertilizer is 300 yuan per ton. Nearly 200 mu of earthworm breeding fields in the base can produce 3000 tons of such fertilizer a year.

Using cow dung to cultivate earthworms not only solves the headache of environmental pollution, but also produces high-quality organic fertilizer while selling earthworms, which can be said to kill many birds with one stone.
