The picture shows a bumper harvest of tomatoes planted by Quan Xiulan.

After several bends in the tortuous village road, the reporter finally found Quan Xiulan in the field. Already in her early sixties, she was barefoot in the field to check the growth of the horse's hoofs, and the seedlings caressed by her rough hands spread green hope. The autumn wind messed up her short hair. "the horse's hoofs have just been fattened. You see, they are growing very well!" Quan Xiulan said happily.

For more than ten years, Quan Xiulan, who has only a junior high school education, has made a career in the soil with her diligence and wisdom, becoming a leading goose in the Yantang Village Committee of Yantang Town, Zhongshan County, and a "good eldest sister" who does not forget her roots when she gets rich in the village.

"if you want to do it, do your best."

The "labor tide" swept through in 1991, when young people in Yantang town went to work in the Pearl River Delta, and many people built small foreign buildings for their families when they came back from work. When Quan Xiulan saw it, she envied it in her heart, and she also wanted to leave the "small stove" at home and rush into the "big stage" outside. "but I really can't leave the house. The children are still young, and the old people have to take care of them." Full of energy, Quan Xiulan had to use it all on the land in her hometown.

In 1998, the 40-acre Ponkan orchard in Yantang Town was on the verge of losing harvest due to poor management. when everyone hesitated to take over, Quan Xiulan took the initiative to contract it. But brute force and drive alone is not enough, the lack of technology is the bottleneck restricting the planting of fruit trees. With the strength and courage of not admitting defeat, she successively visited and studied agricultural bases in Gongcheng, Guilin, Guangdong, and other places, went to Zhongshan County Agriculture Bureau and Science and Technology Bureau to learn skills, actively participated in the technical training courses held in the town, and scrimped and subscribed to a large number of newspapers and books on agricultural technology.

"I have to go to the orchard every day. If I encounter technical problems, I will read more books. When I encounter planting problems, I will ask experienced people for advice." After some painstaking efforts, the orchard contracted by Quan Xiulan had a bumper harvest that year, with an output of 25000 kilograms and an income of 50,000 yuan. "this is no better than going out to work!" Quan Xiulan, who earned the first bucket of gold, redoubled her confidence. In the following years, she boldly expanded the cultivation of more than 60 mu of precocious Wenzhou mandarin and sugar tangerine. The development scale of the orchard was getting larger and larger, and the benefit was getting better and better. She gradually became a large-scale fruit farm with an annual income of 10 to 200000 yuan. She has also become a well-known local fruit grower and rich girl.

In addition to the weather and price reasons, Quan Xiulan's nearly 20-year fruit planting career has never led to a loss in the orchard due to technical mistakes. "if you want it, don't do it. If you want to do it, do it for the best." This is what Chuan Xiulan often says, and it is also a creed that she has been practicing for more than a decade. By groping one step at a time, she has become a fruit "native expert" and unreservedly passed on her successful experience hand-to-hand to other fruit growers. "the eldest sister is amazing. Once she passed by my orchard, looked at it and said, 'your fruit tree has red spiders'. I had no idea what a red spider was, but she found it early. " Uncle Liao, a villager, sighed.

"We will plant whatever Sister Lan grows." In addition to planting fruit trees, since 2012, Quan Xiulan has contracted 170 mu of paddy fields at the foot of Daweiling Mountain, powdered hoofs, tomatoes, flue-cured tobacco and hybrid rice. Change varieties in turn according to market demand. Among them, 70 mu of pink hooves alone have generated 80,000 yuan in one year. When the villagers saw that Quan Xiulan had dug up a "golden pimple" in the land, they also followed suit. Quan Xiulan and her women planted 258mu of vegetables, melons and fruit orchards in 2012 alone, setting a record of 300000 yuan for fruits and 200000 yuan for vegetables and powdered hooves, directly leading the surrounding farmers to increase their income by 500000 yuan.

The "good eldest sister" who never forgets his roots when he gets rich.

Since 2005, Quan Xiulan has won honors such as the national rural women's "double learning and double comparison" female expert, the national old base women's entrepreneurship and innovation model, the autonomous region's "double learning and double comparison" advanced female expert, the "women's science and technology demonstration household", and the regional "science and technology demonstration household".

From contracted orchards to Quan Xiulan, who relies on science and technology to grow fruits, she has not forgotten her fellow villagers and encouraged them to follow the path of growing fruits to get rich. "the thin meat of tribute mandarin peel is sweet, the market price is good, grow tribute orange!" She made great efforts to introduce famous and special fruit varieties to guide the villagers to adjust their industrial structure. "if you give advice at home, I will fight outside." She told her introverted husband that she encouraged him to co-operate with rural brokers to transfer fruit, dredging an one-stop road to fruit production, supply and marketing, and solving the worries of fruit farmers.

One day in early summer of 2010, a woman from the village hurried to Quan Xiulan's house and said, "Sister, it's not good. With fake pesticides, the leaves of my fruit trees have turned brown!" Quan Xiulan hurriedly threw down her work and went to check. Quan Xiulan looked at the fruit tree carefully, then looked at the pesticide manual, and finally breathed a sigh of relief: "it's not a fake pesticide, it's that you didn't adjust the potion in proportion." She has become a "know-it-all" for planting fruit for hundreds of miles, and her orchard has also become a "demonstration base" for people around her to grow fruit. Under her leadership and influence, at the foot of the once barren Dawei Ridge, now the wasteland is dressed in green and the fruit is fragrant. Her Yantang village has a fruit planting area of more than 4000 mu.

Today, the vegetable orchard base she runs has thousands of people coming to work every year. "if you work for Sister Lan, you can earn more than 10,000 yuan a year." Luo Qiulian, a villager of the Yantang Village Committee, said that Quan Xiulan was generous. When she pollinated hybrid rice, everyone only worked for two hours, but she was willing to pay for half a day.

Not only that, in the years when her orchard was booming, Quan Xiulan volunteered to work and lead the villagers to build a road 2 kilometers long and 3 meters wide. She generously invested nearly 10,000 yuan in a drinking water project for people and livestock, diverted mountain spring water from Dawei Ridge, and solved the problem of water for production and domestic use in two natural villages, Di Factory and Sweet Potato Factory. Quan Xiulan has become a "good eldest sister" who will raise her thumbs up whenever she is mentioned.

"as a matter of fact, what I have done is nothing to mention." Whenever someone praises her, Quan Xiulan always smiles carelessly. In her simple outlook on life, "if we live a good life together, we will be more secure." Words and deeds are true. Over the years, she has been working hard to weave dreams of prosperity with her villagers.
