Teach muskmelon technology to give back to Hainan people

He is currently the chairman and researcher of Hainan Jintian seed Industry Co., Ltd. Work in Sanya from October to May of the following year.

Joan wanted to take root in this hot land when she first came here more than 40 years ago.

Tian Shupei, a 70-year-old native of Yuanping City, Shanxi Province, graduated from Bayi Agricultural College in 1969 and was assigned to work in the Institute of Agricultural Sciences in Hami. "at that time, I was mainly engaged in wheat breeding. In 1971, my scientific research team and I first set foot on the hot land of Hainan." Tian Shupei said that as a natural greenhouse for crops, Hainan has unique conditions, which is also of great attraction to him who is engaged in agronomic work.

"normally, northern crops have only one generation (season) a year, but it takes ten generations, that is, 10 years, to breed a new variety, but crops are replaced relatively quickly, and breeding time has become a big problem. In Hainan, crops can complete three generations a year, basically a new variety can be bred in three years, which greatly saves the time of breeding." Tian Shupei said that Hainan is undoubtedly a treasure land of feng shui for agronomy majors, which gave him the idea of taking root in Hainan.

Since then, from October to May of the following year, Tian Shupei will be engaged in breeding work in Hainan and can be regarded as an authentic "old man of migratory birds." he has successively engaged in breeding work in Sanya Yacheng, Meishan, Tengqiao, Lingshui, Baoting and other places. "at first, I was engaged in wheat breeding. In 1980, under the guidance of Professor Lin Depei of Bayi Agricultural College, I began to engage in watermelon breeding, melon breeding and production promotion." Tian Shupei said that in 1986, the melon variety "Xinmi Crispy" he bred became the first hybrid melon variety in the country.

The cultivated melon varieties are popularized in Ledong Changjiang and other places.

Tian Shupei said that in 1994, he bred muskmelon varieties "Yujinxiang" and "Jinguan" became the first batch of muskmelon varieties identified by the state, and were widely popularized and planted in Gansu, Henan, Shaanxi, Yunnan, Ningxia and other places. "I do breeding work in Sanya every year, but it is a pity that the variety I bred was not promoted in Hainan at that time." Tian Shupei said that in 2001, he bought a property in Sanya, and the family began to take root in Hainan.

"Sanya is a blessed land for me, so I choose to take root here." Tian Shupei said that in 2007, he sold the institute to a company and became the company's chief melon breeder. "in 2013, in order to develop better, I left that company and hoped to set up my own company in Hainan to really serve Hainan and make some contributions to Hainan." Tian Shupei said that in 2015, he and several friends set up Hainan Jintian seed Industry Co., Ltd., the location of Sanya.

"Local melon farmers are very interested in the 'Golden Crown' melon variety I bred and have received a lot of praise." Tian Shupei said that the varieties he bred are of good quality, strong disease resistance and adaptability, can achieve stable production of muskmelon and ensure the good quality of muskmelon, effectively avoid a lot of risks for growers, and have been widely promoted. "at present, a total of 10,000 mu of farmland has been planted in Ledong, Changjiang, Sanya and other places, and the planting area will be gradually expanded in the future."

Cultivate more melon varieties and make more contributions to Hainan

Tian Shupei said that his company has a total of 60 mu of land, and there are more than 10 melon varieties on display at present, among which "Hongguan", "Niu Meilong", "Jintian No.1" and "Hongmeilong" are widely promoted at present.

"'Golden Crown' won the first place at the 2015 Asian Expo and became the most popular melon variety." Tian Shupei said that most of his company's employees are from Hainan, and he usually teaches them breeding skills, and some employees will grow some melon varieties in their fields after they have learned them.

"as a 'migratory bird old man', I am 70 years old this year. I hope my technology will not be buried. I hope I can teach it to the local people, so that they can master the technology and eventually benefit them." Tian Shupei said that he hopes to use technology to give back to Hainan and the people, and to engage in the breeding industry, we should not be separated from the market, but also have unique views, not only to cater to the market, but also to lead the market.

"I hope to cultivate more melon varieties that adapt to Hainan's climate, adapt to Hainan's market demand, and bring certain economic benefits to Hainan. Using more varieties to give back to Hainan is also a kind of return to Hainan." Tian Shupei said that over the years, he has developed strong feelings for Hainan, and he hopes to make more contributions to Hainan and make a modest contribution to the development of Hainan's international tourism island.

Tian Shupei said: there are many "migratory birds" talents in Hainan, and government departments should make full use of the human resources of the "migratory birds" to contribute to the development of Hainan's international tourism island. "these 'migratory birds' talents have accumulated experience and resources for many years. Since they have chosen to take root in Hainan, they should also make corresponding contributions to the development of Hainan."
