On March 9, Peng Jin, a villager of Taiping Village, Taiping Town, Lingshan County, lifted the quilt in the middle of his snake house, and more than 10 cobras suddenly raised their bodies and sprayed at him.

Peng Jin has been raising snakes for nearly 10 years and is a big local snake farmer. From dozens at the beginning to thousands now, raising snakes changed his life and put him on the road to wealth. Not only that, he also led more than 50 farmers in the village to raise snakes.

Lingshan County is "the hometown of snake farming in China". Peng Jin's success reflects the rapid development of Lingshan snake industry. Data provided by the local forestry department show that during the 12th five-year Plan period, a total of 10.02 million cobras and mouse snakes were raised in Lingshan, with a total income of about 2.134 billion yuan. More than 30, 000 people in 4500 households in the county became rich by raising snakes.

In order to promote the development of snake breeding industry, Lingshan set up a special industry leading group for artificial domestication and breeding snakes, headed by the county party secretary and county magistrate, and formulated rules and regulations such as "regulations on the Management of artificial Snake breeding in Lingshan County,"regulations on the Transportation of Snake products in Lingshan County," and "Emergency Plan for Wildlife Monitoring, Prevention and Control in Lingshan County." At present, 92 snake farms have been developed in the county, including 10 professional cooperatives for raising snakes, with a total of 6800 farmers raising snakes. There are more than 2 million snakes in the county, with an annual income of about 426 million yuan. In addition to local farmers domesticating snakes, more than 500 farmers from 24 provinces, including Hunan, Sichuan and Fujian, went to Lingshan to learn and train snake farming techniques, so that the snake-raising techniques in Lingshan spread to all parts of the country. In addition, Lingshan is the only snake breeding county where 10 excellent snake species, including "Longxuan Cobra" and "Golden Dragon Cobra" selected by the county, have been extended to 15 provinces across the country.
