College student village officials make gifts and grow small watermelons to find a way to get rich.
Wu Kundao, 28, found a way to get rich by planting gift watermelons with a college student village cadre after graduating from university in 2009.
Stumble upon a good entrepreneurial project
In 2009, Wu Kundao, who graduated from college, ran into a brick wall on his way to find a job.
"I attended several job fairs but failed to find a suitable job." Wu Kundao said that once when he went to a friend's house to play, he tasted a small watermelon, which was not only thin in skin, but also sweeter than ordinary watermelons. At that time, he thought that if he could grow this kind of pocket watermelon, even if the price was more expensive, there should be a market.
Planting for the first time has both gains and losses
Through searching on the Internet, Wu Kundao found that Xinda Agricultural Science and Technology Co., Ltd. has a spare greenhouse in Shizhangzhuang Village, Jiangzuo Town, Yichuan County, and the annual rent for each greenhouse covering an area of 3 mu is 3000 yuan. With the addition of staff wages and the cost of purchasing chemical fertilizers and seeds, each greenhouse invests about 6000 yuan per year.
Not long after planting pocket watermelons for the first time, the watermelons in the greenhouse died, with an average ratio of 1 to 5 per greenhouse. It turns out that tomatoes have been planted in these greenhouses before, and tomatoes and watermelons belong to the family Solanaceae. Affected by continuous cropping, watermelons are planted in the soil without sterilization, which is prone to death. When it was harvested in May, only about 7500 kilograms of watermelons were harvested in the five greenhouses that could have harvested 10, 000 kilograms of watermelons.
Take the gift fruit route
In 2011, Wu staggered the watermelon planting period in each greenhouse for about a week, so that the time for the product to go on sale could be extended from May to July.
At the same time, Wu Kundao sells watermelons to high-end hotels according to the standard that each box of watermelons weighs about 7.5 kilograms and sells for 149 yuan, and the product is positioned as gift watermelons. In 2011, Wu Kundao's profit from selling watermelons increased to 70,000 yuan.
"every year after the watermelons are harvested in May, the greenhouse has been idle, which is a waste of resources. Since September last year, we have begun to grow fine strawberries in the greenhouse. " Wu Kundao said that at present, the company already has 10 greenhouses, and there are corresponding gift fruits on the market in different seasons every year. In the future, if conditions permit, he will introduce more new fine fruit varieties and expand the scope of business.
