This year, the No. 1 document of the Central Committee proposed to "continuously consolidate the foundation of modern agriculture and improve the quality, efficiency and competitiveness of agriculture." Recently, the monograph "functional Agriculture" co-authored by Zhao Qiguo, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and his student Dr. Yin Xuebin has been officially published, providing a good "case" for implementing this requirement in the central document.

As the head of the Agricultural Strategy Research Group of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Academician Zhao Qiguo put forward the conclusion that "agricultural products should move towards eutrophication and functionalization" in the "Roadmap for the Development of Agricultural Science and Technology from China to 2050" compiled in 2008. Only when the economy and society develop to a certain extent will we research and develop this functional agricultural product that promotes human health and longevity, and this agricultural product with high scientific and technological content and good social benefits will inevitably bring corresponding economic benefits. this has opened up a new way to solve the problem of poor price and low efficiency of agricultural products, and achieved the gratifying results of "increasing agricultural efficiency, increasing farmers' income, and increasing people's life expectancy."

This monograph "functional Agriculture" not only expounds the connotation of the new field of modern agriculture from the perspective of science and technology, but also from the combination of theory and time. This paper describes many key links in the development of functional agriculture and the gratifying achievements that Yin Xuebin's team has made, so as to make readers feel the existence and function of this new thing. Through their efforts and hard work, they have obtained more than 200 invention patents at home and abroad, established the first functional agricultural academician workstation in China, and organized four meetings of the International selenium Society. The International selenium Society (national first-level society) has been stationed in China successfully. All this concretely and incisively expounds the important significance, scientific system and industrialization practice of functional agriculture, and depicts a brilliant prospect for the development of functional agriculture for people. The book predicts that by 2020, the world will launch 80 million functional products, and the output value of functional agriculture in China alone will reach 100 billion yuan.

The continuous development of products with high scientific and technological content and meeting the increasing market demand is an important connotation of the supply-side structural reform put forward by the central government at present. The development and development of functional industries is in line with this spirit and is a new way of agricultural supply-side reform. The birth and development of any kind of new things are not flat, and the development of functional agriculture is also full of exploration and hardship. The book puts forward six major trends in the development of functional agriculture, namely, naturalization, functionalization, compounding, convenience, personalization and internationalization, which not only summarizes the characteristics of functional agriculture, but also reflects the long way to go for the development of functional agriculture.

On the vast land of our country, the ecological conditions such as topography, geomorphology, climate and soil are different in different regions. "Ten models" for the development of functional agriculture are put forward in "functional agriculture" according to local conditions, which almost covers the main agricultural areas of our country. it plays a good scientific leading role in the development of functional agriculture.

There are still 70 million poor people in our country. The CPC Central Committee has raised the problem of poverty alleviation to the height of the national development strategy, and the vast majority of poor areas are dominated by agricultural economy. ecological high-value functional agriculture can be regarded as an important development direction of agriculture in poor areas.
