Before we get the definition of husk, it is helpful to have some background on cereal crops such as wheat, rice, barley, oats and other components. Cereal crops are made up of seeds or grains we eat, surrounded by inedible husks or rice husks. Separation of seeds from husks is necessary because inedible hulls need to be removed in order to process and eat grains. This is a two-step process involving threshing and air separation.

Threshing means loosening the hull from the grain, while wind selection means getting rid of the hull. Although some grains have thin paper hulls that are easy to remove, there is no need for threshing and air separation will not be done well, so very little threshing is required. If this is the case, farmers have traditionally only thrown grain into the air and let the airstream blow thin shells or husks into the wind or fall from the lath of the basket.

This wind-assisted process of removing husks from grains is called wind separation, while grains with few hulls are called "naked" grains. Therefore, to answer the question of what is the husk, it is the inedible hull around the grain.

Obviously, if you are growing naked grain, removing the husk is as easy as described above. Keep in mind that the effect is best if there is a significant difference in the weight of the seed and the husk. A fan will also try to blow the husk out of the seed. Before screening in this way, put the tarpaulin on the ground. Place the cooking slices on a tarp and slowly pour the seeds on the baking pan from a few feet. Repeat as needed until all the chaff is gone.

Another method of separating seeds from husks is called "rolling and flying". It is most suitable for spherical seeds. Again, it uses moving air to clean the seeds, but the fan, your breath or a cool hairdryer works best. Arrange a tarp or sheet and put a flat box in the middle. Put the seeds and husks on the cookies, and then put the cookies on the box. Turn on the fan, let the air blow through it, and then lift the end of the cookie so that the seed rolls down. If necessary, repeat until the chaff is blown off.

Sieves can also extract husks from seeds. The stacking sieve is the largest at the top and the smallest at the bottom. Pour the seed and husk mixture into the sieve and shake it into a smaller sieve. The smaller sieve should collect seeds, while the husk should be kept in the larger sieve.

The selected husk can be used as fertilizer to grow flowers, and it can be put into the flower soil after it is fermented. It is a very good fertilizer and has a great effect on the growth of plants.
