On May 9, when members of the East China Sea Environmental Monitoring Center of the State Oceanic Administration were carrying out the task of monitoring the marine ecological environment in the East China Sea, a red tide was detected in the sea area east of Hualiao Mountain in Zhoushan, Zhejiang Province, at 30 degrees 50 minutes north latitude and 123 degrees 00 minutes east longitude. The affected area is about 470 square kilometers. Emergency red tide monitoring was launched on board and reported as soon as possible. Red tide is an "ecological anomaly" phenomenon that one or several kinds of plankton in the ocean reproduce or accumulate in a high degree under certain environmental conditions, causing discoloration of the sea water and affecting and endangering the normal survival of other marine organisms.
