Since you choose to go back to your hometown to start a business, how do you choose the direction of starting a business? When he was a child, Dong Qian often traveled all over the country with his father, who was in the medicine business. When he was a teenager, he had a deep understanding of where to grow what kind of medicine and how to quality it. Occasionally he was very excited when he saw wild Trichosanthes in the field. This traditional Chinese medicine has high economic value for clearing heat and purging fire, invigorating body and relieving thirst, expelling pus and reducing swelling. Therefore, he decided to go to the nearest Chinese herbal medicine planting base, Baoding Anguo, to learn planting techniques.

Starting a business is always difficult. After learning planting techniques, Dong Qian leased 30 mu of arable land to plant. In the first year, the survival rate of his planting was pitifully low, and he harvested very little trichosanthin. In the following year, due to lack of pest control techniques, it was found that almost all Trichosanthes had been eaten up by parasites during harvest. The failure for two consecutive years did not overwhelm Dong Qian, and he carried it down with a "stubborn" strength. In the third year, he invited experts of traditional Chinese medicine from Nanjing Agricultural University to solve the planting problems on the spot, and improved the planting methods and techniques by doing experiments. He succeeded in this year, when the yield of Trichosanthes per mu reached more than 500 jin.

Dong Qian excitedly told reporters that after eight years of painstaking management, his Zhilan traditional Chinese medicine planting base has become a larger trichosanthin planting base in China, and it was awarded the "Trichosanthes GAP Certification Base" by the State Food and Drug Administration last year.

Dong Qian, who is famous, is not satisfied. He told reporters that his dream is to make this family business a common cause of the villagers and a characteristic industry of his hometown. I just want to lead the villagers to become rich together. In order to realize this dream, Dong Qian figured out the production mode of "company + base + farmers" and provided free technical services to farmers growing traditional Chinese medicine in Nanhe County and its surrounding counties, and purchased their products all the year round. In this way, farmers can rest assured to plant and steadily increase their income. In addition, he also set up a cooperative peasant household poverty alleviation and development fund and signed special agreements with poor households, five-guarantee households and other poor groups to help them lift themselves out of poverty or improve their lives at an early date in the form of targeted assistance. At present, more than 600 farmers have joined Dong Qian's "company + base + peasant household" production model. His company provides an average of 400000 temporary jobs every year, indirectly driving thousands of families to employment.

After several years of development, Dong Qian has driven more than 800 farmers around to plant medicinal materials, formed a Chinese herbal medicine planting base of more than 10,000 mu, signed a cooperation agreement with Guangzhou Baiyunshan Zhongyi Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., jointly created the first large-scale and standardized trichosanthin planting base in China, and passed the national GAP certification (abbreviation of GoodAgriculturalPractice, literal translation for good agricultural norms) in 2014.
