Tens of thousands of people in mountain villages in Pingshan County and Neiqiu County in Hebei Province set up their own mourning halls and placed his ashes at the top of Taihang Mountain.

The person who shaped such a life is Li Baoguo, a doctoral supervisor of Hebei Agricultural University, who is known as the "foolish Duke of Taihang", "the God of Wealth of Science and Technology," and "Professor of Farmers." In the early morning of April 10, 2016, Li Baoguo died of a heart attack at the age of 58.

On February 26, 1981, Li Baoguo graduated from Hebei Forestry College (later merged into Hebei Agricultural University) and stayed to teach. On March 6 of the same year, in response to the school's call to enter the Taihang Mountains, he came to Qiannanyu Village, Xingtai County, Hebei Province, and devoted himself to the three-dimensional development project of a small watershed. The mountain soil here is thin, does not contain water, does not see trees every year, and the per capita income is less than 50 yuan.

"I am the son of a farmer, and I cannot see that the common people are poor." Li Baoguo is determined to find a solution for local farmers to shake off poverty and become rich. After getting up early in the morning and running all over the ditches and ridges on the mountain, Li Baoguo and his research team found out the temperament of the mountain and proposed the method of blasting soil preparation to gather soil and intercept the river, so that the vegetation could become a "native" tree.

With the "Juyu" eco-agricultural engineering technology developed by Li Baoguo in the gneiss area in the low mountains of Taihang Mountain, Qiannanyu has thicker soil and more water, and the survival rate of tree planting has jumped from 10% to 90%. Today, in Qiannanyu, 8000 mu of barren mountains and bald mountains have become "the greenest place in Taihang Mountain", with a forest coverage rate of 90.7% and a vegetation coverage rate of 94.6%. After Qiannanyu, Neiqiu Gangdi Village, Pingshan Huluyu, Lincheng Fenghuangling …... In 1999, Gao Shengfu, chairman of Hebei Luling Fruit Company, contracted 3500 mu of arid hilly land in Fenghuangling, Lincheng County, Hebei Province, and died in a large area after planting walnut seedlings. Li Baoguo was invited to come, and through sampling, he found that the surface layer was a random stone beach, and there was no water in it, and below it was a sapphire layer, which was strongly alkaline, and Fenghuang Ridge could not grow living trees at all.

Li Baoguo worked out the treatment plan of "digging pebbles, breaking stone layer, opening ditches to establish water conservation layer", introduced 19 excellent walnut varieties and 11 hickory varieties, and carried out grafting tissue culture experiments again and again. After 5 years of unremitting efforts, a new walnut variety, Green Ridge Walnut, was successfully selected and bred, and the "dwarfing and dense planting technique of Green Ridge thin-skinned Walnut" was recognized as the first in China.

Han Zhenjiang, a villager of Gangdi Village, Neiqiu County, is one of Li Baoguo's peasant students.
