The disposal of manure has always been a headache for livestock and poultry farmers, but cow dung has become a "hot cake" at the Maochang cattle raising Cooperative in Tunchang County, Hainan Province. Members use cow dung to ferment earthworms, which can be sold for 16 yuan a jin.

In 2015, Tunchang county government proposed to develop global ecological circular agriculture and control the pollution of livestock and poultry manure is the primary task. Xie Zuli, chairman of the Maochang cattle raising Professional Cooperative, told the reporter that the cooperative raised Simmental cattle imported from Switzerland and ate much more than ordinary yellow cattle. How to turn cow dung into treasure, not only to solve pollution but also to make money, Xie Zuli, who likes fishing, thought of raising earthworms.

According to Xie Zuli, earthworms generally feed on fermented cow, pig, sheep, chicken feces and domestic waste, and do not compete with other animals for feed. After collecting cow dung and adding straw to ferment for about a week, it can be used to raise earthworms. In order to increase the production rate of earthworms, the cooperative specially introduced high-yield varieties from Japan. The breeding cycle of this variety is about two and a half months to three months, which is shorter than other earthworms. At present, the earthworm farming area of Maochang cooperative is about 12 mu, with an annual output of 10, 000 jin, an output value of nearly 200000 yuan, and an annual consumption of more than 360 tons of cow dung, which effectively solves the problem of cow manure treatment in cooperatives.

"in the traditional cattle industry, cow dung is disposed of as garbage. But in the ecological cycle chain of 'cattle-fermentation-earthworms', cow dung is the most important link. " Xie Zuli said that earthworm dung is a high-quality organic fertilizer, which can not only be used for grass cultivation in cooperatives, but also sold to nearby growers, and this alone can increase income by about 10,000 yuan a year.

Wang Enze, director of the Agriculture Bureau of Tunchang County, said that with this circular agricultural model, Maochang cooperative has absorbed six members in raising cattle, with an average annual income of 40,000 yuan, and 30 members of earthworms, with an average annual income of 30,000 yuan.
