Last Updated: 2024/11/22, Xin Jiaoyuan: Cut down 28 stupid walnut trees and earn more than 7000 yuan

Four years ago, regardless of his wife's firm opposition, Xin Jiaoyuan, a walnut grower in Shanxi Province, "cut off" 28 stupid walnuts with thick bowls and hanging fruits, and grafted them with high-quality and high-yield walnut varieties. Two years later, Xinjiaoyuan, a new variety of walnut trees living in Zhaizishang Village, Longjiao Township, Shilou County, Luliang City, produced 420 jin of dried fruit and sold nearly 9000 yuan, more than 7000 yuan more than the original plant.

Xin Yunping, a poor family in the same village, planted nearly 20 mu of stupid walnuts, and more than 2 mu entered the full fruit period, but only sold more than 1300 yuan. Some villagers have 7 mu of walnuts in their homes, earning only more than 1000 yuan a year.

The village of Zhaizi is surrounded by mountains on both sides, and more than 160 families live near the mountains. In order to help the poor, the local government began to help villagers grow walnuts more than 10 years ago. But now, more than 3000 mu of walnuts have been planted all over the hills of the village, but the effect of getting rid of poverty is not ideal. Only Xin Jiaoyuan not only provided for three college students, but also became a walnut talent. He could earn 30,000 to 40,000 yuan a year if he grafted walnuts to others. Xin Jiaoyuan said that he had never been a poor household and relied on walnut planting technology.

In front of Xin Jiaoyuan's house, there is a small piece of walnut orchard, covering an area of 1.2 mu, a total of 28 trees. "in the past, they planted stupid walnuts, with large size, small nuts, thick and hard skin, and could not sell at a high price." But Xin Jiaoyuan feels that this is a way to live, and it can't be turned into a dead end just because he doesn't know anything. With this idea, seven years ago, Xin Jiaoyuan gritted his teeth and left home with his luggage to learn to grow walnuts. Three years later, Xin Jiaoyuan "beheaded" 28 stupid walnuts as soon as he got home.

Xin Jiaoyuan said, "my wife firmly disagreed at that time. The thick tree at the mouth of the bowl had grown for 10 years, and it was time to hang the fruit, so it didn't hurt to cut it off." But I know in my heart that although there is no income from tree felling for the time being, after the new grafted varieties hang fruit, the income will increase significantly.

Last year, Longjiao Township specially set up a walnut association, hired Xin Jiaoyuan as president, taught fruit growers planting techniques, and led more than 30 people in the township to implement 1000 mu of walnut improvement and efficiency.

Because he was responsible for the grafting of 260 mu of walnut trees by the villagers, Xin Jiaoyuan was so afraid that something would go wrong that he couldn't help going up the mountain to have a look. Looking at the wide-cut walnut trees in front of him, Xin Jiaoyuan, 57, told reporters: "in more than 10 days, when the buds grow up a little bit, these walnut trees will be able to be grafted."

"what we are grafting now are all high-quality varieties such as Gift No. 2 and Liaohe No. 2. Small trees only need to be grafted with three or five buds, while big trees need to be grafted with 20 or 30 buds, and the cost of grafting one bud is 2 yuan." Xin Jiaoyuan told reporters that the grafted new variety can hang fruit in the second year, can reach the full fruit period in eight years, and one plant can produce 30-40 jin of dried fruit; but the traditional variety takes nearly 10 years to hang fruit, 15 years to reach the full fruit stage, and the yield per plant is only more than 10 jin. Some can not even produce 10 jin, and the price is much lower than that of the new variety.

In order to reduce the losses of poor farmers, the Longjiao Township government subsidized farmers with 100 yuan per mu of walnut land and provided some walnut planting insurance. "We have a total of more than 30,000 mu of walnuts in the township, with a per capita of 3 mu. If we want to give full play to the effect of poverty alleviation, we must guide the common people to change their ideas and improve them by grafting in an all-round way." Longjiao Township Party Committee Secretary Guo Yongdong said.

Similar problems exist not only in Longjiao Township, but also in the whole Luliang area. Luliang is located in the loess ruins and gully region, there are still 480000 poor people, and it is the most difficult "hard bone" for Shanxi to help the poor. In order to increase farmers' income, Luliang City made great efforts to develop the walnut industry a few years ago, with an annual development of 500000 mu. But with the increase in quantity, walnut varieties are very messy, and there are six or seven varieties in one mu of land.

"A variety can sell for more than ten yuan per jin, but when mixed up, it can only sell for five or six yuan." Chen Linqiang, director of the poverty alleviation office of Luliang City, said that because different varieties of walnuts are of different size and thickness, it is very difficult to mix them together. Either they are small and dirty when peeling, or the skin is thin and burnt when they are dried, so the price of miscellaneous walnuts is low. No one wants to take it.

In view of this phenomenon, at present, Luliang City is implementing the improvement of quality and efficiency of 2 million mu of dried fruit economic forest, but there is a serious shortage of local talents who understand fruit tree technology in various counties. Although Longjiao Township of Shilou County has set up a special walnut association, only one person who can afford it is Xin Jiaoyuan. There is a large number of related training, but the effect is not as expected.

Xin Jiaoyuan said: "to help the poor, we must first help everyone understand, the key is how to help out the effect." A lot of training has been done, and experts have been hired, but after listening to it, the common people are still the same, just because they have no foundation and do not understand. " At the beginning, when he learned skills, the master taught him hand-in-hand in the field, so he was easy to use, so he had to be approachable and vigorously promote field teaching. "just say that walnut grafting must be completed within tens of seconds, otherwise incision oxidation will reduce the survival rate. If you just sit in the room and talk (do not master the key skills), it will be for nothing."
