The National Bureau of Statistics released the national consumer price index for May on the 9th. Of this total, CPI is down 0.5% from last month, but it is still up 2.0% from the same period last year.

Experts said that the main driving force of the early consumer prices rise came from pork and vegetables, but the pull of both to CPI gradually weakened compared with the same period last year. The increase of CPI in May was lower than that of the previous month, mainly because as the temperature rose, a large number of seasonal vegetable production appeared on the market, and the price of fresh vegetables tended to be normal from the previous high.

Expert interpretation

The picture comes from the website of the National Bureau of Statistics.

Shi Qingcai, analyst of Beijing Shuitun Wholesale Market:

The obvious decline in May was mainly due to the serious freezing injury in the south around the Spring Festival after the Spring Festival this year. Instead, vegetables from the north were transported to the south, which was supposed to be transported from the south to the north. So this also led to the fact that the price of vegetables in the north was about 30% higher than that in the country at that time. But recently, the continuous decline on the one hand is a normal recovery decline, on the other hand, the weather in the north in May is still conducive to vegetable production, and the production speed is accelerated obviously. At the same time, due to the high price some time ago, farmers' enthusiasm for growing vegetables has increased, especially in May, the market volume of northern leafy vegetables increased significantly, a large number of supply.

At the beginning of this year, the cold wave weather affected the production and transportation of vegetables, and the price of fresh vegetables was high. With the warmer weather, seasonal fresh vegetables on the market, the market supply gradually increased, the price of fresh vegetables tends to be normal. Yao Jingyuan, a special researcher at the Counsellor's Office of the State Council, believes that the impact of rising vegetable prices on prices is over:

Yao Jingyuan:

Vegetables can fall by more than 20% in May. From this point of view, the overall climate in June and July is OK, which is conducive to the production and cultivation of vegetables, so the impact of vegetable prices on CPI can be eliminated in the future. By May, our CPI was still stable at 2%, and our target for the whole year was within 3%. It should be said that there was no problem in accomplishing the target.
