Taxus chinensis is widely distributed in Lechang, Shaanxi, Hubei, western Anhui, Fanjing Mountain and Foding Mountain areas of Tongren City, Guizhou Province, Sichuan Province, most areas of southwest Chongqing, Dabanying virgin forest of Youyang, southern Gansu Province and other places.

All taxus species are found in the Northern Hemisphere except one Australian species which is found in the Southern Hemisphere. Taxus chinensis has 4 species and 1 variety, distributed in most parts of china. Taxus cuspidata is mainly distributed in Changbai Mountain and Heilongjiang Province in Jilin Province, and a small amount is also distributed in the eastern mountainous area of Liaoning Province. Taxus yunnanensis is mainly distributed in 16 counties of western yunnan and prefectures, with a total area of about 90,000 square kilometers. Its characteristics are wide distribution, scattered growth, no pure forest, mostly scattered trees in the forest. Taxus chinensis var. mairei is mainly distributed in pure forests in eastern, southwestern and eastern Yunnan, mostly scattered trees in forests.

The reason why yew was destroyed was that in the early 1990s, a company in the United States discovered that paclitaxel in yew bark had anti-cancer effects. When the news reached China and Yunnan, people suddenly realized that the treasure was around them. People peeled the yew frantically. No one took the detailed Regulations on the Protection of Precious Tree Species in Yunnan Province to heart. Therefore, more and more yew lives came to an abrupt end overnight.

The State Forestry Administration has made clear instructions on the "Taxus project":"Taxus is a first-class protected tree species in China, which has good ecological benefits and extremely high economic value. The state supports the vigorous construction of Taxus forests in appropriate areas. All sectors of society should be encouraged and encouraged to participate in afforestation in various forms such as contracting, leasing, auction and stock cooperation."
