The legend of daffodils

1. Legend one

It is said that Narcissus is the embodiment of Emperor Yao's daughter E Huang and Nu Ying. They both married Shun, the elder sister was the queen, and the younger sister was the concubine, and the three had a very good relationship. Shun died in the southern patrol, and the Emperor and Nu Ying both died in love in the Xiangjiang River. God had mercy on the two and turned their souls into riverside daffodils, and they also became the flower gods of the December daffodils.

2. Legend II

It is said that in the Song Dynasty, a Beijing official from Fujian told him to return to his hometown. When he returned south by boat and was about to return to his hometown of Zhangzhou, he saw a kind of aquatic plant growing along the river with fragrant white flowers, so he asked someone to collect some and bring them back for cultivation. According to Zhang's Genealogy in Caiban Township, during the Jingtai period of the Ming Dynasty, their ancestor Zhang Guanghui worked as a school official in Kyoto. One winter, he asked for leave to return to his hometown and sailed through Jiangxi's Jishui. He found that on the inshore water, wild flowers with emerald green leaves, yellow-and-white flowers, and fragrant flowers were picked up and cultivated and passed down to Xinhui.

3. Legend III

Chongming daffodils come from Fujian. That was when Empress Wu Zetian of the Tang Dynasty wanted all flowers to bloom in her imperial garden at the same time. The god of flowers in the sky did not dare to disobey the will. Of course, the six sisters of daffodils in Fujian were no exception and were forced to go west to Chang'an. The little sister did not want to blossom for the queen alone. She only walked through the mouth of the Yangtze River and saw a piece of pure land in the middle of the river, so she slipped down quietly on Chongming Island. Therefore, five Fujian daffodils bloom and one Chongming daffodil blooms.

4. Greek mythology

Narcissus is a beautiful teenager in Greek mythology. His father is a river god and his mother is a fairy. After Narcissus was born, his mother received an oracle: when Narcissus grew up, he would be the most beautiful man in the world; however, he would end up depressed because he was infatuated with his appearance. In order to escape the fulfillment of the oracle, Narcissus's mother deliberately arranged for her son to grow up in the mountains, away from streams, lakes and seas, so that Narcissus could never see her face. As his mother wished, Narcissus grew up safely in the mountains and forests, and as expected by the oracle, he was so beautiful that he became the most beautiful girl in the world who had ever seen him, and fell deeply in love with him. However, Narcissus is so arrogant that no woman can get his love. He only likes to hunt in the mountains with his friends all day, and is dismissive of young girls who fall in love with him.

The mountain goddess Urko fell in love with Narcissus at first sight, but suffered from being unable to express his feelings, so he simply repeated the voice of others and ignored her infatuation. Narcissus's heart of stone broke her heart. She asked Aphrodite, the goddess of love, to punish him and make him suffer. Melancholy, expectation, and nothing made her leave her former companions and walk aimlessly into the forest. Here, her sadness is increasing, her face is haggard, she has disappeared from the mountains, but her soft voice always haunts the valley. If you walk in the silent mountains, she will respond to your voice. This is the mountain goddess Urko-Echo (echo).

The cold face and stone heart of Narcissus broke the girl's heart, and Namisis, the goddess of retribution, decided to teach him a lesson. One day, Narcissus was hunting in the wild. It was so hot that after a while, he was already sweating. Just then, the breeze blew, and with bursts of cool, he followed the wind. Stroll around, coming head-on, is a lake as clear as a mirror. The lake, to Narcissus, is strange. Narcissus went over and sat by the lake, trying to reach out and touch the lake to see how it felt. Who knew that when he fixed his eyes on the smooth and mirrored surface of the lake, he was surprised to see a perfect face. Narcissus thought: who is this beauty? It's so beautiful. After gazing for a moment, he found that when he waved to the beauty in the water, the beauty in the water also waved to him; when he smiled at the beauty in the water, the beauty in the water also smiled at him; but when he reached out to touch the beauty, the beauty immediately disappeared; when he withdrew his hand, and soon the beauty reappeared and looked at him affectionately, Narcissus certainly did not know that what appeared on the lake was his own reflection. He actually fell deeply in love with his own reflection. In order not to lose the people in the lake, he guarded the lake day and night, and day after day passed, Narcissus still stayed by the lake without sleep, and stayed by the lake without sleep, willing to be the patron saint of beauty in his heart. Sometimes he rested by the lake and sometimes wandered around the lake shore, but he could not take his eyes off the reflection in the water and stared at the lake forever. Finally, the oracle came true. Narcissus sits dead by the lake because he is infatuated with his reflection.

When the fairies knew about this, they were heartbroken and rushed to the lake to bury Narcissus' body. But the lake where Narcissus used to sit was empty except for a strange clump of little flowers. It turned out that Cupid took pity on Narcissus and turned him into a daffodil, blooming where there was water, so that he could always look at his reflection. That grotesque cluster of flowers, quiet, refined and arrogant, is very beautiful. In memory of Narcissus, the fairies named the flower Narcissus, that is, daffodils. And that's why daffodils always grow by the water. Because of this story, people use Narcissism to describe people who are extremely fond of their looks and have narcissistic tendencies.

Another version says that the swamp fairy took a fancy to him, and when he became friends with him, he saw his own reflection in the eyes of the swamp fairy, and he wanted to see it again, so the swamp fairy lied to her that it was her soul and lured it into her own world. And killed him in the swamp. Another said that Narcissus had a twin sister, and they were very close to each other, but his sister died very young. Narcissus missed her very much. One day, he saw himself in the pond water and thought it was his sister. He stayed there for a long time and refused to leave so that he finally died by the pond.
