According to media reports, in Liangping County, Chongqing, an exploration that may have a far-reaching impact is being carried out in a low profile, with a small number of farmers returning contracted land on a pilot basis, no longer holding on to the land as a "lifeline", but choosing to "wash their feet and leave the field." completely leave the land. In the village groups that implemented the "withdrawal of land contractual management rights from the pilot", this measure was welcomed by those farmers with non-agricultural occupation and non-agricultural income, which provided a new idea for deepening rural reform.

Once upon a time, land was the lifeblood of farmers. Now, however, more and more farmers are beginning to make a living in other ways, and land has become a "sideline" to support their families. On the one hand, many farmers are becoming less and less dependent on land, on the other hand, grain, as a basic industry, cannot afford any neglect. How to solve this problem? Intensive management is an inevitable choice-which has been proved by the experience of developed countries. The crux of the problem lies in how to deal with the relationship between farmers and land.

Liangping's model of "testing the water" and returning the land was created in this respect. They have launched three models: the first is the withdrawal mode of the whole society guided by the practical problems and industrial development, the second is the whole household exit model guided by the demand of farmers to return land, and the third is the whole withdrawal model guided by the land demand of owners. Compared with the land transfer, the advantage of the three models is that they solve the worries of the concentrated users of the land-once the farmers break the contract and ask for the resumption of the land, they may let their huge investment go down the drain and affect the sustained and stable operation; on the other hand, it also solves the farmers' concern that if the land users default on rent or even "run away" due to poor management, it will leave "sequelae" and affect their own interests.

The greater enlightenment of Liangping's way of "testing the water" and returning the land is that it does not adopt an across-the-board approach, meets the differentiated needs of different places and farmers, and finds ways of development in accordance with local conditions. If there is no movement, we should fully respect the wishes of the peasants and try it out wherever the conditions are ripe. Farmers who apply to return their land are even examined to ensure that they do not repent after returning their land because of temporary family difficulties.
