A research team at Shiga Medical University and the Central Research Institute for Laboratory Animals in Japan has developed a long-tailed macaque whose body glows green when exposed to ultraviolet light.

The researchers inserted a gene encoding green fluorescent protein (GFP) into the eggs of long-tailed macaques and fertilized them. The resulting monkeys had the gene encoding GFP. The researchers said that under normal circumstances, the appearance of this genetically modified monkey and ordinary long-tailed macaque is no different, but when exposed to ultraviolet light, this genetically modified monkey will become a green monkey. Researchers hope to use the genetically modified monkeys to study human diseases.
