It is reported that whitefly-resistant cotton varieties were developed and known to the scientific community as early as 2013, but in fact, before Indian farmland was attacked by whitefly unexpectedly this year, it has been limited to the National Plant Research Institute and has not been really used.

India has a total cotton acre of about 40 million acres, covering nine states, including Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Central, Karnataka, Tamil Nader and Terengana. Whitefly has caused damage to different crops in different countries at different times, and this is the first time that India has suffered such a serious whitefly attack.

The National Plant Research Institute has been engaged in cotton crop research since 1994, which is why whitefly resistant cotton varieties have been focused on research and development. In the experiment, cotton seeds were injected with an insect-resistant protein extracted from medicinal plants, then cultivated in a greenhouse, and finally a new whitefly-resistant cotton variety was developed.

"We have informed the Punjab Agricultural University in Ludjana of this research, and the university has also shown great interest in fighting new varieties of whitefly cotton." Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said that in addition, the Indian Cotton Research Center in Nagpur, the Indian Agricultural Research Council Laboratory, was notified, but they did not respond further.

Before the cotton variety enters the market, it needs to be approved by the GM board and other regulators before conducting field trials. Side translation
