Recently, the Research Laboratory of crop Genome and genetic improvement, Institute of Biotechnology, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, has made new progress in the regulation and control mechanism of auxin transport in plant cells.

By screening the constructed rice RNAi mutant library, the researchers isolated a mutant that affected the stem length of rice at filling stage. Further study on the mutant showed that a new gene OsCOLE1 (OsCOV-LIKE1) with unknown function was down-regulated in the mutant, which could affect the content of auxin in rice basal internodes. In this study, a new tonoplast auxin transporter and its regulatory protein were found, which revealed a new regulation mode of auxin transport on plant cell vacuoles for the first time at the molecular level. it further expands people's existing understanding of the process of auxin transport.
