Xinhua News Agency photo, Urumqi, June 7, 2016 * * the Academy of Animal Husbandry Sciences used genome editing technology to obtain genetically modified sheep with different coat colors for the first time in the world. Five genetically modified fine wool lambs born in March 2016 were photographed at the experimental base of the Institute of Biotechnology of the Academy of Animal Husbandry Sciences (photo taken on June 3). On June 7, the Academy of Animal Husbandry held a press conference to introduce the genome editing technology of the research group of Liu Mingjun of the Institute of Biotechnology. Liu Mingjun said that the technological breakthrough of using genome editing technology to change the coat color of large animals will provide a new accurate, efficient and rapid means for livestock breeding in the future. The five lambs with genetic modification showed different coat color types, and the growth and development of lambs was normal. Photo taken by Xinhua News Agency reporter Shen Qiao

Xinhua News Agency, Urumqi, June 7 (Reporter Zhang Hongyi Shen Qiao) the lambs, which were originally born white, are different when they are born: two are pure black with white spots on the top of their heads; two are black and white like the coats of giant pandas; and one is brown and white.

Their "genius" comes from the genome editing technology of Liu Mingjun, a researcher at the Institute of Biotechnology of the Animal Husbandry Academy of Sciences.

At a press conference held here on the 7th, Wang Lijian, president of the Academy of Animal Husbandry, said: "this is the first time that fine wool sheep with different wool color patterns have been obtained by using genome editing technology (also known as genome genetic modification technology). It is a major breakthrough made by animal husbandry scientists in the application and research of technology in the frontier field of international life science."
