Last Updated: 2024/11/06, Chinese scientists discover new genes for increasing yield of super rice

The reporter learned from the China Rice Research Institute on September 7 that the super rice germplasm innovation team of the institute, in cooperation with the Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, successfully isolated and cloned an important gene GS2, which can significantly increase the yield of super rice, from a local rice variety in Zhejiang.

It is understood that in the 1990s, the research team obtained a copy of Zhejiang local large-grain variety "Bao Da Grain" from the National medium-term Bank of Rice Germplasm Resources, which has a tall and strong plant, a long ear and a large grain, and a 1000-grain weight of more than 48 grams. The researchers found that the GS2 dominant allele from "Baodagi" could significantly increase the panicle length and 1000-grain weight of rice, but the changes of plant height and tiller were not significant, thus increasing rice yield.

The results showed that GS2 dominant allele could increase the 1000-grain weight and plot yield of "Liangyoupeijiu" parent 9311, the first two-line hybrid rice in China, by more than 40%. After combining it with "Peiai 64s" to form hybrid rice, it can further increase the yield by 9.5% compared with "Liangyou Peijiu".
