Bao Bingsong, 46, is a farmer in Gufeng Village, Changqiao Township, Jing County, Xuancheng City, Anhui Province. The two-story building of his family stands out in the village. It is hard to imagine that at the beginning of 2015, Bao Bingsong and his family were huddled in two earthen houses built more than 40 years ago.

Because of their large number of brothers and sisters, Bao Bingsong and his wife Wang Yueqing received only two earthen houses and one mu of land from their families after their marriage in 1995. In the following years, Bao Bingsong's daughter and son were born one after another, living on more than an acre of crops and bamboo on the mountain, and they lived in poverty. The village had deliberately listed the Bao Bingsong family as "poor families" to help, but because of face-saving refusal, he decided to go out to work. Due to the lack of skills, Bao Bingsong's working income is limited, and his children continue to go to school, his family's financial situation has not improved.

Gufeng Village, located in the mountainous area of southern Anhui, is rich in bamboo and has a factory producing oilcloth umbrellas. On the recommendation of the local poverty alleviation department, Bao Bingsong and his wife entered the umbrella factory in 2005 and 2011 respectively to learn the traditional technology of making oilcloth umbrellas. Today, Bao Bingsong and his wife have become the backbone of the factory, earning a total of 6000 yuan a month.

In early 2015, Bao Bingsong knocked down the earthen house, took out his savings over the past few years, and built the most beautiful building in the village on the same site. "Poverty is not terrible," he said. "as long as you are willing to work, you can get rid of poverty with your hands."
