From May 1981 to November 1991, he served as Director of the Department of Agronomy of Nanjing Agricultural University, Vice Dean and Dean of Nanjing Agricultural College, President of Nanjing Agricultural University, and was elected Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 1999.

He selected a new wheat variety "Ningmai 3" by using radiation breeding technology, established the technical system of wheat chromosome and cell engineering, took the lead in creating a new distant germplasm of wheat by the combination of molecular biology and cytogenetics, and discovered the immune gene Pm21 of powdery mildew, which promoted the wide application of the new distant germplasm in wheat breeding. His team has won three consecutive periods of support from the Maxwell Foundation of the United States, which has become a successful example of international cooperation in our school. The research results won the second prize and the third prize of the National Science and Technology Invention Award, the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, the first prize and the second prize of the provincial and ministerial science and technology progress award.
