Professor Liu Dajun, an outstanding party member of Communist Party of China, an internationally famous wheat geneticist, an outstanding agricultural educator, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and former president of Nanjing Agricultural University, died in Nanjing at 19:50 on August 22nd. He was 91.

He graduated from the Department of Agronomy of Jinling University in 1949 and stayed to teach.

In 1955, he was sent to study at the Timilaev Agricultural College in Moscow, the former Soviet Union, and received an associate doctorate in 1959. After returning to China in 1960, he worked in Nanjing Agricultural College (renamed Nanjing Agricultural University in 1984) for a long time.

From May 1981 to November 1991, he served as Director of the Department of Agronomy of Nanjing Agricultural University, Vice Dean and Dean of Nanjing Agricultural College, President of Nanjing Agricultural University, and was elected Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 1999.

He has served as deputy head of the second and third crop discipline Review Group of the academic degree Committee of the State Council, member and standing Committee member of the first and second Science and Technology Committee of the Ministry of Agriculture, executive director and director of the Plant Genetics Professional Committee of the Chinese Genetics Society, vice chairman of the Chinese crop Society, chairman of Jiangsu Provincial Genetics Society, and chairman of Jiangsu Biotechnology Association.

He has served as deputy editor of "Journal of Genetics", "Genetics" and editorial board of "Chinese Science", "Science Bulletin", "Progress of Natural Science", "crop Journal" and so on.

Mr. Liu Dajun is rigorous in his scholarship, quick in thinking, diligent in practice and good at innovation. He has been engaged in wheat genetics and breeding for more than 60 years, and has devoted his whole life to wheat genetics and breeding, especially in the fields of exogenous excellent gene discovery and germplasm innovation. He had keen academic insight and always stood at the forefront of discipline development. He selected a new wheat variety "Ningmai 3" by using radiation breeding technology, established the technical system of wheat chromosome and cell engineering, took the lead in creating a new distant germplasm of wheat by the combination of molecular biology and cytogenetics, and discovered the immune gene Pm21 of powdery mildew, which promoted the wide application of the new distant germplasm in wheat breeding. His team has won three consecutive periods of support from the Maxwell Foundation of the United States, which has become a successful example of international cooperation in our school. The research results won the second prize and the third prize of the National Science and Technology Invention Award, the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, the first prize and the second prize of the provincial and ministerial science and technology progress award. Won the Science and Technology Progress Award of he Liang he Li Foundation in 2000.
