Chen Jianping (see photo above, file photo) Academician, "diagnosis and treatment" of plant diseases. He found two kinds of barley viruses in cereal polymyxa, and put forward the first direct evidence of fungal transmission of plant virus for the first time in the world, clarified the relationship between virus deletion mutation and fungal transmission, and explained the function of multiple fungi transmitting wheat virus genes. He also identified 13 new species of plant viruses and intercepted more than 1000 batches of exotic plant pathogens.

This internationally respected plant virologist once resolutely gave up preferential treatment abroad; this "boy who came out of the countryside" returned to the countryside, took root in the vast fields, and dedicated his youth to the motherland's Mailang Daoxiang.

? Putting what you have learned into practice is his motto

Chen Jianping was born in 1963 in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province. Through efforts, he was admitted to Zhejiang Agricultural University plant protection major, but was ridiculed by neighbors "admitted to the university but jumped into the agricultural door", "the major is to inject medicine and kill insects with sprayers on his back." Chen Jianping ignored the white eyes and ridicule.

Chen Jianping graduated from university and stayed in Zhejiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences to engage in scientific research. "the conditions of the Academy of Agricultural Sciences are difficult, but they are engaged in a job that I like." Chen Jianping was assigned to work in the plant virus research room. From 1989 to 1995, Chen Jianping studied in the UK and made a major breakthrough and made a figure in the field of plant virus research. At that time, Chen Jianping was engaged in plant virus research with his tutor. after completing the established task, Chen Jianping challenged the "impossible task"-- to study the internal relationship between cereal polymyxa and plant viruses. There are many plant virologists in the world who have been exploring this field for 30 years, but no progress has been made.

Chen Jianping forgot to eat and sleep and put into the research. The cereal polymyxomycetes with a diameter of 5 microns were cut into 100 slices and a total of 10,000 ultra-thin sections were prepared for electron microscope observation. Finally, in the "contest" with himself again and again, he took pictures of the presence of barley and sexual mosaic virus in cereal polymyxa in an electron microscope with a magnification of 80,000 times, and set off an upsurge of attention in the relevant academic fields after publishing the paper.

Unmoved by the praise and glory that swarmed in, Chen Jianping decided to return home and apply what he had learned in Britain to the country's food security and the development of agricultural science and technology.

? He regards his students as his own children.

From a person returning home to leading a team of 50 or 60 people, Chen Jianping talks about team building and talent training, and has a lot of feelings. "I treated my students as well as my mentors did."

In the process of growing up, Chen Jianping met too many "experts" and "dignitaries". When he was studying in the UK, the tutor unreservedly took out the research materials that he had accumulated for 17 years for Chen Jianping's reference. When Chen Jianping took electron microscope photos of the virus in the cereal polymyxa and published the paper, the tutor insisted on putting Chen Jianping's name in the position of the first author. These things left an indelible mark in Chen Jianping's mind: "my greatest achievement in Britain is not the scientific research achievements I have made, but the scientific spirit of my mentor's selfless dedication."

Chen Jianping treats students as if they were children. He often goes into the laboratory to talk to students about work and life, giving careful guidance to each person's characteristics, giving priority to encouragement and little criticism, and creating a respectful, equal and open academic atmosphere.

There is an interesting phenomenon in Chen Jianping's team: striving to be the "person behind". Whenever awards or papers are published, team members are always scrambling to recommend others, and no one is "squeezing their heads" out of self-interest. This made Chen Jianping both moved and gratified.

After returning home, Chen Jianping led the team to make a series of dazzling achievements. From 1996 to 2005, their laboratories accounted for about 28% of the SCI papers published in the field of fungal-borne plant viruses in the world; from 2006 to 2015, the proportion reached more than 60%. Over the past 20 years, their research achievements have won 5 first and second prizes for national scientific and technological progress and 9 first-class prizes for provincial scientific and technological progress.

? Combine personal interests with the needs of the motherland

Now, in addition to continuing to do a good job in plant virus research, Chen Jianping has focused on the issue of agricultural development. he has carried out strategic research on modern agricultural development and put forward the concept, connotation, model, mechanism and path of agricultural complex. to explore and practice.

Why did you make this change? Chen Jianping told a story. Once he went to Chun'an, Zhejiang Province to help the poor and met a little girl. The little girl said that she most yearns for the time when pecans are ripe, because "Mom and Dad can go home." This makes Chen Jianping feel uneasy: "many farmers work outside to make a living, and countless rural children are forced to separate from their parents." As an agricultural science and technology worker, what on earth can I do? " Chen Jianping hopes to do something to enable farmers to have a good production, a good life and a good livelihood at home, so that rural children can grow up happily around their parents.

As a result, Chen Jianping put forward the concept of agricultural complex and explored the integration system of multiple industries, hoping to comprehensively solve the problems of agriculture, rural areas and farmers. He also thought about the innovation of agricultural science and technology system and mechanism, hoping to promote the combination of science and technology and economy.

"scientists should not only proceed from interest and actively explore scientific and technological issues, but also have the motherland in mind and consider the needs of the country. Scientists with feelings and a sense of mission are the only scientists who combine personal interests with the needs of the country. " Chen Jianping said.
