Character sketch

In people's impression, a "post-80s" female graduate student should be a female white-collar worker who wears fashionable and beautiful clothes, goes in and out of tall office buildings and does decent work. Therefore, the reporter could not help but be surprised to see Chen Haifeng for the first time, because she could not be connected with the above words at all. In front of Chen Haifeng, the upper body is wearing a simple short sleeves, the lower body is a pair of sweatpants, simply dressed.

"We have to work in the fields every now and then, and it's more convenient to work in these."

Chen Haifeng's answer shows the normal work of agricultural science and technology workers running around in the fields for years. Like farmers, they have to experience the sun and rain, and like farmers, they have to grow and harvest in spring and autumn. The difference is that in addition to the farm tools in their hands, they also have the professional knowledge in their heads. They use their professional knowledge to help farmers increase their production and income. "for the bumper harvest of the land and for the peasants to get rid of poverty, we worked a little harder and it was worth it." Chen Haifeng said with a smile.

They are a group of respectable intellectuals. Chen Haifeng is one of the representatives.

Children are determined to breed

Chen Haifeng comes from a small mountain village in Yizhou, Guangxi. Her parents are both out-and-out farmers. During the college entrance examination, Chen Haifeng got good grades, and her teachers and classmates advised her to choose a major that is more suitable for girls and has a better chance of getting a decent job after graduation. However, this girl from the countryside did not hesitate to enroll in the agronomy major of Guangxi University.

When she heard that Chen Haifeng had chosen a farming major, her classmates jokingly asked her, "Chen Haifeng, are you going home to help your parents farm?" The simple Chen Haifeng firmly believes that no matter what he does, as long as it is useful to society, it is a promising job.

His obsession with agronomy originated from Chen Haifeng's experience as a teenager. Born in the countryside, Chen Haifeng began to help her family with farm work at a young age, and every day she followed adults to sow seeds, weed and harvest in the fields. But the family's hard work often doesn't get much back. "the poor harvest is mainly due to the poor quality of the seeds at that time, and we often buy fake and shoddy seeds." Looking at the tired figure of her parents, little Chen Haifeng secretly made up her mind that she must work hard to be admitted to the university, study and cultivate good seeds, so that her parents' hard work is no longer in vain!

Go through hardships to breed improved varieties

Through the hard work of four years of university and three years of graduate students, Chen Haifeng learned a wealth of agronomic knowledge and laid a solid foundation for cultivating improved varieties in the future. After graduation, Chen Haifeng came to work at the Yulin Academy of Agricultural Sciences and became an agricultural science and technology worker as she wished. Speaking of Chen Haifeng, Rong Linxi, a veteran comrade of the Yulin Academy of Agricultural Sciences, has a deep memory of her tenacity in breaking the casserole and asking to the end: "the seniors of the entire Academy of Agricultural Sciences should have answered her questions and usually went out to exchange and study. Some people were asked by her that they could not answer."

Soon, Chen Haifeng, who is diligent and inquisitive, is like a fine seed, taking root and sprouting, tillering and spiking, and growing up rapidly.

Because of the quick work, the Yulin Academy of Agricultural Sciences arranged for Chen Haifeng to participate in the breeding of "Yusi No. 6". In order to select an ideal plant line, Chen Haifeng and her colleagues often went to the fields in three volts to record tens of thousands of rice panicles. There were dozens of data on a rice ear, and the data recorded alone in an experiment was more than one meter high. In order to select seeds, Chen Haifeng and her colleagues threshed the rice ears with their hands, stroking them in handfuls and peeling them one grain at a time, usually taking off thousands of grains, peeling off their fingernails, smoothing out the cocoons, and making the plush on the millet go into the hole, which was as painful as a needle. After four years of breeding, Chen Haifeng and her colleagues traveled all over the countryside of Yulin. Thick notebooks recorded the ecological environment of rice in different areas and recorded the biological characteristics and production levels of rice in different areas.

If you give, you will get something. The "Yusi 6" selected by Chen Haifeng and his colleagues has greatly improved the rice quality and yield compared with the high-quality rice widely planted at that time, such as Liusha Youzhan 202 and Jiafuxiang 1. the brown rice rate, milled rice rate and protein content all reached the second grade of the national standard, and the cooked rice was soft and delicious, and the yield per hectare reached more than 6799 kilograms. Yusi No. 6 with high quality and high yield was approved by Guangxi crop Variety approval Committee in June 2013 and was soon acquired and sold by China seed Industry Group.

Make a wedding dress with no regrets

In addition to breeding and seed selection, another major work of Chen Haifeng is the regional trial of rice. Chen Haifeng told reporters that a regional test refers to a comprehensive evaluation of the high yield, adaptability, stress resistance, and quality of the newly bred varieties through the requirements of unified norms, according to the performance of the varieties in the regional tests. combined with stress resistance identification and quality results, a comprehensive evaluation of the variety was carried out. If the newly bred varieties want to pass the approval and promotion, they must carry out regional trials.

Although regional trials of rice are indispensable in the promotion of new varieties, not everyone is willing to do the job. Various difficulties, such as a large number of experimental groups, many varieties of participants, and easy to mix, all require a great deal of patience and perseverance from the experimenters. "We in the industry jokingly call the regional trial to help others hold a baby." Chen Haifeng said with a smile. Although the experimenter has to pay a lot in the process of the regional trial, the new variety will not bring much benefit to the experimenter if it is approved.

In spite of this, Chen Haifeng devoted herself to the rice regional trial with no regrets. Her reason is very simple and practical: to truthfully reflect the quality and yield of seeds, fake and shoddy seeds must not be allowed to escape the regional test and flow into the market to harm farmers! In order to ensure the accuracy and reliability of each test data, process and results, Chen Haifeng personally carried out the experiment of each variety from field design to sowing, transplanting and harvesting records. Every year, the Yulin Academy of Agricultural Sciences conducts regional trials of at least 150 new varieties. Over the past seven years, Chen Haifeng has conducted regional trials on more than 1000 varieties.

In February 2017, with the approval of the Ministry of Agriculture, the Plant Variety testing Center of the Ministry of Agriculture established the first plant variety testing center of the Ministry of Agriculture in Guangxi according to the agro-ecological regional layout and relying on the Yulin Academy of Agricultural Sciences to undertake the task of DUS testing of plant varieties in the Guangdong-Guangxi ecological region. Chen Haifeng was appointed as the technical director of the DUS testing Yulin branch center. In the face of this unprecedented job, Chen Haifeng feels a great responsibility. "I will try my best to promote good rice varieties to the market through my own work, and make a modest contribution to increasing farmers' income and food security," she said. "
