In the face of the menacing African swine fever and the tremendous pressure of epidemic prevention on domestic pig farmers, the local black pig industry, which is mainly raised by food waste, will bear the brunt of the disease. In the future, when a large amount of food waste is converted to compost or biomass energy, how will the black pig industry respond? Do government agencies and private operators have research and development plans for alternative feed?

The Animal products Test Institute of the Council of Agriculture (referred to as the "Animal testing Institute") said that low-protein, high-fiber feed and similar food waste feed have been developed, and the protein content has been controlled between 10-15%. At present, the results of the first phase of the test have been released, there is no palatability doubt, food intake is also very good, and has the potential to move towards a higher-end meat market in the future.

Tseng Jen-teh, director-general of the Taiwan Local Black Pig self-help Association, says that it is a good start for a unit to start developing black pig feed, but not as a rush behind the "food waste ban." instead, it really starts with the research and development of the nutritional formula and feeding needs of black pigs. He also points out that at present, black pig farmers are standing at industrial intersections, and many pig farms that can't keep up with the pace have chosen to quit, leaving behind pig farmers who recognize the sense of transformation. "We believe that even if there is no food waste, the local black pig still has a way of operating." it is expected that the local black pig can develop towards characteristic and exquisite industries such as Kagoshima Black Pig in Japan and Iberian Pig in Spain.
