Considering the depletion of mackerel resources, the Fisheries Department formulated the mackerel scad Fisheries Management measures in 2013, requiring that during the growing period of June, no mackerel can be caught by large or small vessels, and that fishing vessels of more than 100 tons are not allowed to operate within 12 nautical miles. as mackerel body length resources are gradually restored, the Fisheries Department is currently planning to reopen more than 100 tons of fishing vessels into the red heart waters of Suao (about 6-12 miles from shore) every year from January to May. In view of the fact that a 100-ton fishing boat enters 12 nautical miles for fishing, local fishing associations and scholars have different opinions. The Keelung fishing Association said that if large vessels do not abide by the law and take advantage of the opportunity to fish within three or four nautical miles after opening up, the household income of small fishing vessels will be affected. The Su'ao Fisheries Association believes that mackerel is no longer as small as it used to be and should be opened up before rolling review. Li Guotian, former president of Hai University, who has investigated mackerel resources for a long time, says that after nearly five years of implementation of the fishing ban, mackerel resources have gradually recovered, and their mature body length has reached 30 centimeters, which can be temporarily opened for one year, and a resource assessment and review will be conducted the following year.

News tip: Taiwan mackerel has two main spawning grounds, one is located near Pengjiayu in the north, and the other is in the red heart sea area of Suao. Mackerel can be divided into white-bellied mackerel and flower-bellied mackerel. Suao Honghuoxin is the main spawning area for mackerel, and groups of mackerel mothers come here from January to May every year to lay eggs. Because of its rich fish population and calm waves, fishermen rushed here to catch mackerel.
