Rhizoma Formosa is a perennial herb with tubers. Leaves entire; basal leaves numbered, long elliptic, ca. 5 to 10 cm long, ca. 2 cm wide, apex obtuse, base cordate; leaves long stalked, ca. 5 to 20 cm as for the morphological characteristics of flowers and fruits, flowering between May and October.
In terms of life history, when the paddy fields are flooded from April to May every spring, the new leaves of the Taiwan watermelon will grow from the tubers and float on the water surface when they mature; after about November in autumn, the leaves will gradually wither, leaving only the tubers buried in the soil, and new leaves will grow again at the beginning of the next year's growing period. Therefore, in winter, Taiwan's water fish enters a dormant period, during which no trace of it can be observed or found.
From April to May every year, Taiwan water fish in rice fields grow several long oval floating leaves from the tubers and float on the water surface.
Taiwan water fish still has no solid record, and it is impossible to know whether sexual reproduction (seeds) can be used to produce offspring. At present, it has been observed that the mechanism of asexual reproduction by tuber or walking tuber is closely related to the farming method of rice field: after rice harvest, the tiller will cut the tuber buried in the soil into several small pieces. these cut tubers are scattered in the farmland and will grow again at the beginning of the growing season the following year, forming numerous plantlets. The tuber of Taiwan water mackerel has the characteristics of drought tolerance, can endure long-term dry soil environment after the dry season of rice harvest, and can grow again after the soil is moist, which also allows it to adapt to the disturbance environment caused by farming.
