Valerian is a perennial herb, is a kind of traditional Chinese medicine, many proprietary Chinese medicines contain its ingredients, causing high medicinal value, so it has a wide range of uses. But its growth is slow, wild resources can not meet the growing demand, so there are artificial cultivation in many areas, so how to plant valerian? Let's take a look.

1. Land selection and preparation

Valerian generally grows in hillside grasslands, forests or ditches below 2500 meters above sea level. Like humid environment, planting with high groundwater level or low-lying land, requires convenient drainage and irrigation, loose and fertile neutral or acid sandy soil. Planting should be combined with land preparation, 2500 kg of rotten farm fertilizer and 50 kg of compound fertilizer should be applied per mu, and beds should be made after intensive cultivation and drainage ditches should be opened.

2. Methods of reproduction

Valeriana is propagated by sowing. From June to July, most of the seeds are yellowish brown. Harvest and dry them. When collecting seeds, it should be noted that the seeds of Valeriana are relatively small and easy to fall under water seal. Generally use autumn sowing, in September-October in the border surface according to the row spacing of 40 cm trench, seeds evenly sowed, pay attention to cover the soil should not be too deep, 1 cm is appropriate. After sowing, the seedlings should be watered in time in case of drought, and the seedlings can emerge in about 7-10 days. if they are in high and cold areas, they can be sown in March in spring.

3. Field management

Valerian likes the humid environment, so it is necessary to often water to keep the soil moist, especially in the seedling stage, if the soil drought may affect the emergence rate, serious seeds can not emerge smoothly, resulting in rotten seeds. The first fertilization was carried out after the emergence of seedlings in spring, applying 1000-1500 kg of human and animal dung water or urea 8-10 kg per mu; the second fertilization was in early June, when it was the peak growing season, with 1500 kg of human and animal manure per mu and foliar fertilizer sprayed once a week. After budding, in addition to remaining in the field, the rest should remove the buds, reduce nutrient consumption, concentrate nutrients to supply roots, promote tuber expansion and increase yield.

4. Pest control

The disease of valerian is mainly viral mosaic disease, which will shrink and deform the plant leaves or cause plant dwarfism. It is found that the diseased plants should be pulled out and burned in the field in time, and the prevention and control of aphids should be strengthened so as not to spread the disease. Insect pests are mainly mole cricket and aphids, mole cricket can be sprayed with carbofuran to control, aphids can be controlled by dimethoate spray.
