The dragon fruit is a perennial climbing succulent plant that usually propagates without seeds. In our life, one of the most commonly used methods of dragon fruit planting is cutting, followed by the latest dragon fruit grafting technology. Let's learn more about the breeding methods of these two kinds of dragon fruit.

1. Cutting method

Cutting is the most commonly used and simplest way of propagation, and the best cutting time is spring. First of all, we should choose the sturdy, vigorous stem as the seed stem, and then cut the seed stem into small segments of about 15 centimeters to let the wound be air-dried, but at the same time keep the seed stem hydrated. After the seed stem is treated, the cuttings can be inserted into the sand bed for cultivation. It does not need to be watered within a week. Generally, it has to wait about ten days before it can be watered. Under normal circumstances, it can take root in about half a month, but it does not rule out special cases. It can take root in about a month at the latest. When the root growth of the cuttage pitaya seedlings is more exuberant, it is time to transplant in the field.

2. Grafting method

In fact, the grafting method of dragon fruit has only become popular in recent years, but its grafting technology is still very difficult. Because there are not many kinds of rootstocks, and there are some differences between grafting methods and other fruit trees. Let's analyze it in detail.

1. Selection of rootstock and scion

As the variety of dragon fruit is different, so the choice of rootstock is also different, if the rootstock selection is not correct, it is also difficult to graft successfully. For example, the yellow dragon fruit needs to choose the wild triangular pillar or the overlord flower as the rootstock, while the red meat dragon fruit can choose the white meat dragon fruit as the rootstock. On the other hand, we need to choose the scion that is born in the same year, strong, free from diseases and insect pests, and excellent in the product.

2. Grafting time

When the dragon fruit is propagated by grafting, it also has a requirement on the time of grafting. And the time suitable for grafting dragon fruit is actually very abundant, generally starting from March every year, one can be grafted from October to October, and the temperature during this period is basically between 20 and 30 degrees. At this time, the healing ability of dragon fruit grafted seedlings is stronger, which can improve the survival rate of grafting.

3. Grafting method

The grafting utensils should be disinfected before grafting to avoid bacterial infection and affect the survival rate of grafting. Secondly, there are two methods of dragon fruit grafting, which are flat grafting method and wedge grafting method. The butt grafting method is mainly to cross-cut the rootstock, then closely connect the rootstock with the scion, fix it with special tools, and tie it up with string at the same time. The wedge method is to cut a crack longitudinally on the rootstock, then cut the scion into a duck's bill and insert it into the crack, then fix it with plastic tape and wrap it with cling film.

So much for the breeding method of dragon fruit that the editor wants to share with you today. In fact, if pitaya is planted in pots, it can also be propagated with seeds, and the temperature of seed cultivation should be kept at about 25 degrees, and its requirements for culture soil are also relatively high.
