Taiwan uses genetic engineering technology to cultivate sesame nutritious rice
Researchers at the Research Institute of Chung Hsing University in Taiwan use genetic engineering technology to improve the nutritional value of rice and successfully breed sesame nutritious rice. The researchers implanted sesame 2S albumin gene into rice strain Tainong 67 to develop a new variety of rice containing sesame 2S albumin, which is named sesame nutritious rice. Sesame nutritious rice mainly increases the content of methionine (or methionine) in rice protein, makes the amino acid composition of rice protein more in line with human needs, and improves the nutritional value.
Generally speaking, the methionine content of plant protein is lower than that of animal protein, but sesame is rich in methionine. It has been found that sesame methionine comes from a seed storage protein called 2S albumin.
