Marigolds rarely have disease and pest problems. Occasionally wet soil or pests induce one of several fungal infections, either through discolored spots, mold coatings or wilting on leaves. The best defense is to keep weeds and marigolds planted where they drain well. American marigolds tend to be more susceptible than other types.

Mites and aphids sometimes infect marigolds. Repeated spraying of water or insecticidal soap, usually every other day for a week or two, will solve the problem.

How to deal with South African marigolds after they wither?

Marigold flowers are live and dry quality cut flowers. For flower bunches, cut open the newly opened flowers in the early morning and immediately place the stems in a pot of warm water. After that, strip the stems of the lower leaves that might soil the water and place the flowers in vases with fresh water. Calendula flowers will last a week or more if you add some floral preservatives to the vase water.

Calendula is ideal for dry arrangements and floral crafts. Cut perfect flowers at their peak; remove leaves from stems; and hang upside down in warm, dry places, such as attics, until dry. The flowers will shrink a bit, but their colors will remain intense. If support is required in an arrangement, insert the thread into the marigold rod.

Signet marigold appears on many lists of edible flowers. Petals from their florets add bright colors and spicy flavors to the salad they toss. When chopped, the petals are a rich garnish for boiled eggs, steamed vegetables or fish dishes. Use only home-grown flowers to ensure they are free of chemical pesticides. If you tend to be allergic to various grasses and other plants, be careful.
