Pinellia ternata (Pinellia ternata) is a perennial herb belonging to Pinellia genus of Araceae. It originated in Guanzhong area of Shaanxi Province and has spread to all parts of the country. Pinellia ternata not only can be used as medicinal materials, but also flowers, leaves, plants peculiar beautiful, as ornamental plants have great potential for development.

Pinellia ternata plants up to 15~30 cm, single leaf from the top of the tuber, elliptic, apex pointed, entire, both smooth glabrous, 4~6 cm long, 1.5~3 cm wide. The leaf shape varies, sometimes there are heteromorphic leaves with different lateral lobes. May to July to grow out of the shape of scorpion-tail flesh spica inflorescence, 7~10 cm long, terminal upright, extending out of the spathe. The spathe is green, 6 - 7 cm long, flowers unisexual. Monoecious, male flowers borne in upper part of inflorescence, white; female flowers borne in lower part of male flowers, green. Fruiting period is from August to September.

I. Breeding methods

1. Pinellia ternata is mainly propagated by tubers. Small tubers sprouted from 2~3-year-old Pinellia ternata can be obtained in autumn, stored in moist sand and placed in shade. When the temperature reaches above 14℃ in March to April of the next year, it can be sown;2. bulblet propagation: after the leaves of the mother stem are pulled out, the mature bulblets at the lower part of the petiole are selected from May to June and buried in the sandy loam with a depth of 3 cm. In that year, 1~2 leaves can grow, and the diameter of tubers reaches about 1 cm;3. seed propagation: when the seeds are mature in August to September, they can be sown as they are picked, but the germination rate is not high and the cycle is longer.

II. Family cultivation

1. Substrate selection: Pinellia ternata is shallow root system, likes fertilizer and water, substrate requires loose and fertile sandy loam, soil moisture content is 20%~30%, pH value is 6~7.

2. Water management: After Pinellia ternata leaves are extracted, when the temperature is high, the drought resistance of the above-ground part is poor, water shortage and too dry air can lead to the withering of its leaves. Summer sunny days, to insist on morning, noon spray 1 time foliar water, watering the matrix at night, if long-term use of tap water is easy to lead to pot soil salinization and is not conducive to growth, can be in the first two days before watering or half a month to apply ferrous sulfate once to reduce soil alkalinity. In addition to growth peak, other time should be kept semi-dry and semi-wet state, too wet soil easy to cause tuber hypoxia and rotten roots, rotten stems.

3, light: Pinellia likes light, slightly shade, but does not like shade, should be placed on the south balcony or windowsill. When the summer noon sun direct south balcony, appropriate move it to the wall, such as the afternoon sun weakened, and then move back to the balcony. Light intensity above 90000Lux and below 3000Lux were unfavorable to the growth of Pinellia ternata.

4. Fertilizer: Pinellia ternata likes fertilizer, and the requirements for fertilizer are not very strict. In spring and autumn, base fertilizer or compound fertilizer can be applied once. During the growth period, dilute potassium dihydrogen phosphate foliar fertilizer is applied once a month, which can be carried out together with foliar spraying.
