Feather lice is a common ectoparasitic disease in chickens. Due to the outbreak of feather lice disease in a chicken farm in Taobei District, the egg production decreased significantly and the economic benefit of breeding decreased. The results of diagnosis and treatment are reported as follows:

1 morbidity

The chicken farm has five years of experience, and every year it was hatched in the spring of the previous year. After a laying period, it was removed from the shelves in the autumn of the following year and adopted the all-in-all-out system. At the beginning of December 2003, the egg production of 20,000 young laying hens in four chicken houses decreased significantly, and there was a phenomenon of hair loss. The contents of calcium, phosphorus, multivitamins, light intensity and antibiotics in feed were adjusted, but the treatment effect was not good.

2 clinical symptoms

Chickens are often crowded, restless, frightened, dishevelled, mostly broken, most chickens peck their own feathers, the chicken body is thin, and rash and dandruff can be seen on the skin. Looking at the chicken body, we can see that there are a large number of feather lice crawling, dandruff, and there are no pathological symptoms in many chickens.

3Diagnostic

According to the strange itching and restless performance of chickens and the examination of chickens, it was found that a large number of feather lice were parasitized at the base of chicken skin feathers, which was diagnosed as mixed infection of chicken body lice, chicken head lice and chicken down lice.

4 treatment

The chicken body was sprayed with 12.5g/L deltamethrin and the chicken house utensils were disinfected. The chickens were sprayed once on the 4th day and 10th day after the first spray. One week after spraying, the health of the chickens improved obviously, and the egg production gradually increased. After three times of spray baths, all the feather lice died and the egg production returned to the normal level.

5 Prevention

Chickens were regularly disinfected with eliminate virus medicine spray, once every 2 months, and the disease did not occur in the farm since then.

6 Summary

6.1 feather lice is a common parasitic disease in chickens, which can occur all the year round, feeding on feathers and dandruff. Chickens with lice infect each other through chickens, and its harm depends on the degree of infection. Seriously infected chickens can hinder the growth of chicks and reduce the egg production of adult chickens. Due to the symptoms of affected chickens are not obvious, the loss is not visible and other reasons, often do not attract enough attention. As a result, the disease has not been controlled timely and effectively.

6.2 the clinical symptoms of the disease are easy to be misdiagnosed as insufficiency of feed nutrition, lack of calcium and other trace elements, excessive light intensity and so on. If you encounter suspected cases, the pathogen should be examined for diagnosis and reasonable treatment.

6.3 for the treatment of feather lice, the concentration of the liquid should be well mastered and used according to the instructions. After feeding and drinking water, the feed and drinking water should be cleaned up to prevent chickens from poisoning caused by accidental ingestion of the liquid. When taking medicine, the temperature of the chicken house should be kept above 18 ℃, so as to prevent the chicken body from getting cold by spraying.

6.4 Chicken sheds should be clean and hygienic, and regular disinfection should be carried out. Insecticidal and lice control is one of the important factors to improve chicken production performance and increase breeding efficiency. It is suggested that chicken farmers should pay attention to the work of killing lice.
