Improved rice varieties have relatively stable specific heredity and relative consistency in biology, economy and morphology. In specific areas, specific cultivation conditions and periods, it meets the needs of production in terms of yield, maturity, quality and adaptability. In addition to having the basic conditions of varieties, improved rice varieties must also have the advantages of high yield, stable yield, good rice quality, disease resistance, insect resistance, strong stress resistance and so on.

A good rice seed should include three aspects: first, it should have the characteristics of high yield, high quality and multi-resistance; the processed milled rice has higher rate of head rice, better appearance merchandise, better palatability after cooking, and rice is soft but not glued, that is, delicious, good price, easy to sell. Second, no matter the selected or introduced varieties, after the variety examination and approval, the seed supply units need to maintain the excellent species character and breed the production species with high purity and strong germination potential; third, it is necessary to adapt to the requirements of ecological and production level and planting system reform in different agricultural regions, that is, to adapt to seasons, stubble and other production conditions. Of course, as an improved variety also has shortcomings, but in the main economic traits and adaptability should be good, no serious defects, or weaknesses can be overcome through cultivation measures. However, the selection of high-quality rice varieties should be based on local conditions. In rice fields with low soil fertility, heavy soil quality and slow development in early stage, high quality varieties with strong tillering ability, fertilizer tolerance and lodging resistance should be selected, while high quality rice varieties with medium or strong tillering ability should be selected in rice fields with high soil fertility, soft soil and early growth. In addition, the selection of high-quality rice varieties should consider whether it can meet the arrangement of early and late cropping stubble, and the selection of late-growing high-quality rice varieties should be based on the principle that local safe full heading can be achieved.
