Sheep stomatitis is an inflammation of the surface and deep tissues of the oral mucosa. In the pathological process, oral mucosa and gingiva are inflamed, which can make it difficult for diseased sheep to eat and chew, clear salivation and increase pain sensitivity. Simple local inflammation and secondary systemic reaction are common in clinic.

1. Etiology

Primary stomatitis is mostly caused by trauma, sheep can be caused by eating sharp plant branches, straw stabbing the mouth, can also be caused by exposure to ammonia, strong acid, strong alkali, damage to the wound mucosa. In sheep suffering from mouth sores, foot-and-mouth disease, sheep pox fungal stomatitis, stomatitis symptoms can also occur.

II. Diagnosis

Eating and masticatory disorders are a symptom of stomatitis. Clinically, catarrhal, vesicular and ulcerative stomatitis are common. Sheep with primary stomatitis often eat less or stop. Oral mucosa flushing, swelling, pain, salivation, serious cases can be seen bleeding, erosion, ulcers or cause physical emaciation.

Secondary stomatitis is more common with systemic reactions such as elevated body temperature. Such as sheep aphtha, oral mucosa and upper and lower lips, mouth corners show water herpes and bleeding dry scab-like necrosis. When sheep suffer from foot-and-mouth disease, in addition to blisters and rotten spots in the oral mucosa, there are also similar lesions between the toes and the skin; when sheep pox occurs, there are not only typical acne in the oral mucosa, but also in the breast, corner of the eye, head, lower abdominal skin and so on.

Allergic stomatitis is mostly related to sudden feeding or contact with allergens. In addition to inflammatory changes in the oral cavity, there are congestion, exudation, ulceration, scab and other changes in the nasal cavity, breast, elbow or medial thigh.

III. Treatment

Strengthen management and nursing to prevent primary stomatitis caused by oral injury. Patients with infectious diseases complicated with stomatitis should be isolated and disinfected. Mild stomatitis can be rinsed with 2%-3% sodium bicarbonate solution, 0.1% potassium permanganate solution or 2% salt water; for chronic stomatitis, rinse with 1%-5% egg silver solution or 2% alum solution, and wipe with 1 ∶ 9 iodine glycerin or honey when there is an ulcer. When the systemic reaction was obvious, 400000 ~ 800000 units of penicillin and 1000 mg of streptomycin were injected intramuscularly for 3 to 5 days. Sulfonamides can also be taken.
