Japonica indica 89 is a temperature-sensitive variety, which can be used both in the morning and in the evening. The whole growth period is mainly restricted by the change of temperature. The whole growth period is about 135 days in the central part of the province, and it is not suitable for large-scale planting in the rice growing area of northern Guangdong. The whole growth period in the central region of late construction is about 110 days.

Japonica indica 89 plants have a height of 98.5-97.3cm, medium tillering ability, stout stalks and good ripe color. This variety belongs to large panicle type, with large ratio of grain to stalk and good yield. The average effective panicle per mu is 200000, the panicle length is 20cm, the total number of grains per panicle is 120.8-156.0, of which the number of filled grains is 101.6-129.8, the seed setting rate is 83.2% Mel 84.1%, the 1000-grain weight is 19.7-19.8 g, and the average yield per mu is 408.2-416.2kg.

Because it belongs to intersubspecific distant hybrid varieties, there will be more or less separation, so we should pay attention to removing impurities during seed propagation and maintain the relative stability and purity of the varieties.
